Get to Know the Oklahoma Challenge!

The Oklahoma Challenge project is an initiative of Educational Alternatives, a nonprofit organization based out of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, that focuses on educating individuals on the dangers of engaging in distracted driving activities.

The Oklahoma Challenge was founded by Dr. Richard Coberg, a human relations professor for the University of Oklahoma, in 1984. The Oklahoma Challenge was created to educate teens and young adults on the dangers of drunk driving and encourage young drivers to wear their seatbelts. Following great success in these areas, the Oklahoma Challenge turned its attention to a rising concern – the dire problem of distracted driving.

The Oklahoma Challenge is unique from other initiatives in that it is a teen-led, peer-to-peer taught safe-driving curriculum that empowers student leaders to go back to their respective schools and communities and teach their fellow peers, friends and families what they learned.

The Oklahoma Challenge’s director, Linda Terrell, leads the safe-driving efforts by providing safe-driving events and programs year-round to educate kids, teens and young adults about the dangers of distracted driving.

Linda’s vision for the Oklahoma Challenge is to expand from teaching her signature safe-driving curriculum from exclusively elementary through high schools to universities as well. Linda would also like to expand beyond just the state of Oklahoma and become recognized as a nation-wide initiative.
