Our team was lucky enough to join some of the team of What Will I Become? for its US premiere at the deadCenter Film Festival, right here in Oklahoma City.

The documentary is a powerful story that shines the light on the compounding societal harms that lead trans boys to die by su***de at disproportionately high rates. Trans stories by trans folks, for all of us. You can catch the last screening at deadCenter of What Will I Become? Sunday June 14th at 5 PM in the Noble Theater at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. Ticket information and more details available at the deadCenter website at https://dcff.eventive.org/schedule/69a87e83702cd907a24a50cd

You can learn more about the documentary at https://www.wwibdoc.com/

It's June 12th 2026.

10 years since the Pulse Nightclub shooting. A decade later, and the threat of harm to our community only feels more real to too many. We deserve safety. In the places we call home. In the places we find community. In the places we experience joy.

In 2026, pride feels like: a Mary Oliver tattoo. Getting to see folks I wasn’t sure would still be here celebrate a birthday. Offering someone sunscreen. Seeing myself captured by someone else in a way that reflects my gender euphoria. Threading a needle (literally & also figuratively). Seeing someone I know is reading a book I love. Have you eaten? Showing up with Big Truck tacos. Chai lattes at Second Story Books. Let me go with you? Did you make it home? I’ll pick you up. Bi lighting. Practicing conflict with comrades. Folks wearing masks. Birkenstocks and socks. Adding another plate to the sled at Empowerhouse. Settling in for a movie at Oklahoma Film Exchange. Family dinners in Mo’s backyard. Eating Nate’s latest perfected baked good. I think you’d enjoy this. Finishing another glue stick while I junk journal. Finding the perfect sticker to fill the open space on a water bottle. Folding zines. Letting myself be celebrated. Refusing to give into arbitrary and unconstitutional demands to stand during the prayer and pledge at the State Capitol. Having all 3 of my cats cuddle with me at the same time. Making bad art. Sharing my art with friends. Sharing my art with strangers. Writing collaboratively in mediums that are beyond my comfort zone. Giving public comment during public meetings. Dreaming with friends. Writing down goals for how I’m getting stronger. Making lists. Being part of Freedom Oklahoma’s evolution. Being part of my own evolution. Taking a picture every time I stop and notice the sky. Refusing to give into despair.

From Solas: Transgender Law Center's Building Trans Power conference was everything I didn’t know I needed. From the drag performers to the buckets of knowledge that the presenters shared with us, it was all joy. My favorite part was the constant celebration for our trans elders and the trancestors in the movement spaces. It gave me so much hope to see them shining so bright and getting their much deserved flowers. Their willingness to take photos with us younger folks and stop and share their knowledge was something I won’t take for granted, just being able to share space with them was a reward enough.

I can’t wait for Laverne Cox’s book to come out, and loved hearing her talk about the framework of all that is right with trans folks instead of all that is perceived by others to be wrong with us. Also, seeing Zaya Wade in all her glory was truly amazing! And of course my most favorite part was the inaugural kick off of our forthcoming Freedom Futures project with the team, these oral history interviews were so powerful and I can’t wait to share them with y'all later this year.

45 years ago today, the CDC published a report in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) describing five cases of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (P*P) in previously healthy gay men in Los Angeles. This brief article was the first official, published documentation of the disease that would later be named AIDS.

Today also marks HIV Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day. First observed in 2014, this awareness day centers on uplifting and supporting HIV long-term survivors, a group which includes people diagnosed with HIV before the advent of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy or HAART in 1996, people who have been living with HIV for more than 10 years, and people who acquired HIV at birth or as young children, also known as Dandelions.

And as we celebrate the lives, stories, and advocacy of long-term survivors, we also acknowledge presently the US House and Senate have begun to consider FY27 appropriations bills for domestic and global HIV programs. Without robust FY27 funding, opportunities will be lost to save lives, improve health, and reduce cost. In the U.S. the need for resources is rising as a result of reduced Medicaid and private insurance coverage, constrained state funding, and rising costs. HIV care, treatment, and prevention initiatives in several states are facing extreme challenges, and some are shutting down or implementing severe cost containment measures – including treatment waitlists – as a result of years of flat federal funding, recent cuts, and increased costs. The need for global commitments to help prevent millions of deaths and new cases of HIV continues, unabated, with the lives of people worldwide impacted by cuts and reduced federal funding for global HIV prevention and treatment.
