Here’s something nobody prepares you for. You win the crown and realize you have a full year of representing ahead of you, and nobody taught you how to do that part.

Competition prep is all about the stage, the interview room, and the judges. But the second you win, everything changes. You’re doing media interviews where a reporter wants a 10-second soundbite, not a two-minute answer. You’re at rodeos talking to board members, contestants, sponsors, and kids (always kids!), and people who have no idea what rodeo queening even is. You’re posting on social media and realizing that how you show up on camera matters just as much as how you showed up on stage at the contest.

And some girls are completely unprepared for the job. Because nobody taught them. 👑

The contest is a few days. The title is 365. That’s where the real communication skills kick in.

I need to talk about something that I see way too often in this world.

I’ve watched moms sit in the audience and tear apart teenage girls - girls their daughters are competing against. Out loud. With their eyes and facial expressions. Right in front of their daughter’s face.

I’ve encountered moms like this before as a competitor and now as a coach. The ones who would rant about the other contestants. What they wore. How they spoke. Why they didn’t deserve their scores.

And you know what usually happens? Their daughters stop wanting to compete. Not because they’re scared of the stage. Because her mom (or moms around her) made it toxic.

Your job as a parent is not to be your daughter’s strategist against other kids. It’s to be her safe place. The biggest fan of her just as she is, not how she is against everyone else. 💛

Some of the best competitors I’ve coached have moms who never once mentioned another girl’s name. They just showed up, loved their daughter, and let the coaching handle the rest.

Say hello to Cheyanne Green, who competed at the National Little Britches Rodeo Association (National Little Britches Assc.) finals last week in poles and at the queen contest.

She walked away from the pageant with a photogenics award, new friends, and even more determination.

We’ve been working together since April on speech, interview, and impromptu, and the proof is in the pudding - that’s a 15 year old on that stage!

Her transformation these past months, and really the last several weeks, show that rodeo queening is about more than titles. It’s a place for personal growth.

So though she didn’t win a place on the 2027 NLBRA Royalty court (this time!), the poise, eloquence, and confidence she gained through her preparation are skills she will take everywhere she goes.

Congratulations, Chey! You deserve to be so proud. 💜👑

Say hello to the 2027 Black Canyon Stock Show and Rodeo (Black Canyon Stock Show and Rodeo Royalty) Queen Cearra Henderson (Cearra Henderson)! 👑

Cearra is an experienced titleholder, having held numerous previous titles, including 2024 Miss Teen Rodeo Idaho.

We worked together on extemporaneous speech and impromptu questions, building on her existing foundation for Black Canyon and future contests.

Cearra is a student at University of Montana Western and is showing by example how young ladies can balance school and rodeo queening, and be successful at both.

Congratulations, Cearra!
