We’ve lost another icon. 🖤

Tim Curry has passed away at the age of 80. 💔

He gave us decades of unforgettable characters, but for generations of LGBTQ+ people, there was Dr. Frank-N-Furter.

When The Rocky Horror Picture Show arrived in 1975, q***rness, gender expression and sexuality were still things many people were expected to hide. Then Tim Curry walked onto a screen in heels, fishnets, pearls and lipstick and absolutely refused to apologize for taking up space. ✨

Rocky Horror became more than a movie. Its midnight screenings became a refuge for q***r people, misfits and outsiders looking for a place where being different wasn’t something to hide.

Tim once said that Frank gave teenagers “permission to be different.” 🤌🏽

What an incredible legacy to leave behind.

Permission to be strange. To be loud. To find your people. To be exactly who you are.

Rest beautifully, Tim Curry. 🖤🏳️‍🌈

Today, we’re thinking about Dolly Parton and not just the voice, the rhinestones, the hair, or the songs we all know by heart. 🌸🌸

We’re thinking about the way she chose to move through this world. ✨

Dolly knew what it was like to grow up without much. And when success gave her the ability to change lives, she spent decades doing exactly that. 💯

She created Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library because her father never had the opportunity to learn to read or write. What began in her little corner of Tennessee grew into an international program that has put hundreds of millions of books into the hands of children, mailed directly to their homes at no cost to their families. 🥹

She invested in education in ways that were beautifully practical. When students in her hometown were dropping out of school, she promised seventh and eighth graders $500 of her own money if they graduated. The dropout rate for those classes fell dramatically. Her foundation went on to fund college scholarships, and Dollywood has helped employees pursue further education by covering tuition and other educational costs. 🥹

When wildfires devastated her home county and families lost everything, she didn’t simply offer words of sympathy. Her My People Fund ultimately distributed millions of dollars to families who had lost their homes. 🥹

She donated to hospitals. She supported medical research. She helped communities recover after disasters. She gave to children, families, and people she would never meet. 🥹

And then there was the music. 🎶

Dolly had an extraordinary ability to write about ordinary people.

Working people. Poor people. Women trying to survive. People who had been judged, overlooked, heartbroken, underestimated, or simply trying to make it through another day. 🩷

She could write about poverty without making poor people small. She could sing about women and subjects that polite society would rather whisper about. She could take something painful, complicated, or deeply human and put it into a song that made somebody somewhere think:

“Someone understands.”

Maybe that is why so many people felt like they knew her.

Because underneath all the glamour was a woman who never seemed embarrassed about where she came from and never forgot the people who were still there. ✨

At Other Options, Inc., we talk often about what it means to care for our neighbors. Sometimes that means food. Sometimes it means education, dignity, opportunity, advocacy, or simply making sure another human being knows they have not been forgotten. 🥹

She could have simply been one of the greatest songwriters of her generation.

She chose to be something more. 💖

She chose kindness. Again and again and again.

What a remarkable way to spend a life.

Rest easy, Dolly. Thank you for the music, the books, the opportunities, the courage, the laughter, and most of all, for reminding us that success means a whole lot more when you use it to lift somebody else up. 🩷

We are SO excited for this year’s AIDS Walk for AIDS Walk of Oklahoma City, Inc. and we want YOU on our team! 😍😍

Last year, we showed up BIG. In fact, we had the largest walk team! 🥹❤️ There was just one little problem… not everyone who walked with us was officially registered, which meant we didn’t get our plaque. 😭

We are NOT letting that happen this year! 😂

And there’s another reason to get registered… 👀
👕 Registered walkers will receive an official TEAM SHIRT!

We truly cannot wait to see everyone, walk together, celebrate together, and show up LOUD for our community. Whether you walked with us last year or this will be your first time, we want you there. ❤️

Let’s see if we can bring the BIGGEST WALK TEAM again this year… and this time, we’re bringing that plaque home! 🏆😂

🥵 OKLAHOMA, IT IS HOT. 🥵

Please, please HYDRATE. 💧

Don’t wait until you feel thirsty. Keep water with you. Drink throughout the day. Take breaks from the heat whenever you can. And check on the people around you. ESPECIALLY our elders, neighbors who may not have reliable air conditioning, and anyone spending extended time outdoors. 🥺

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke can become serious very quickly. If you start feeling dizzy, weak, nauseated, confused, or just not right, get somewhere cool and take it seriously. 🤌🏽

And remember: your pets are feeling this heat too. 🐾 Hot pavement can burn paws, parked cars become dangerous incredibly fast, and they need plenty of fresh, cool water and shade.

We love our community, and we want every one of you safe.

Drink the water. Take the break. Find the shade. Check on each other. 💧❤️

Stay cool, friends. 🥶

There are some people who don’t just volunteer their time… they leave pieces of their heart behind in the places they serve.

Jeanine was one of those people. 🌸

She gave so much of herself to Other Options. She showed up with kindness, compassion, and a heart that never hesitated to help someone in need. Whether she realized it or not, she made this place brighter simply by being here. She touched the lives of our clients, our volunteers, and our staff in ways that will never be forgotten.

The Pantry will never be the same without her.

Our hearts are broken, but we are so incredibly grateful that we had the privilege of knowing Jeanine, serving beside her, laughing with her, and witnessing the love she poured into this community. Her legacy isn’t just in the work she did… it’s in the lives she touched through her generosity and gentle spirit.

To Jeanine’s family and everyone who loved her, please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Thank you for sharing such an extraordinary woman with us. She was deeply loved here, and she always will be.

Rest peacefully, Jeanine. Your place in our Pantry family can never be replaced. We will carry your kindness with us always. ❤️

Please join us in celebrating the beautiful life of Jeanine Elizabeth Bell on Wednesday, August 12, from 12:00 PM–3:00 PM at Mayflower Congregational Church. We hope you’ll help us honor a woman who gave so much to so many.

Pantry will be closed Wednesday, August 12th.

Our Other Options family received devastating news last night of the sudden passing of our beloved and longtime staff member, Jeanine Bell.

She was an amazing mother, daughter, sister, friend and more. I wish I had the words that truly honored the woman she was.

Please, help how you can by sharing or donating during this very heartbreaking time.

Thank you for loving us all Jeanine! We will miss your laughter… and I will miss you saying, “I know!” 😔

Love,
Kris

At Other Options, we believe care goes far beyond what’s on a pantry shelf. 🥚🧀

We’re incredibly excited and grateful to partner with Esprit and Snake Pit to bring free haircuts to our clients because sometimes confidence, dignity, and feeling like yourself again can start with something as simple as sitting in a salon chair and being cared for. 🤌🏽

We couldn’t ask for a better person to help us offer this service. Esprit’s heart for people and passion for making everyone feel comfortable, respected, and beautiful makes this partnership feel like a perfect fit. ❤️‍🔥

We are so thankful to have you in our corner, Esprit. 🖤✂️

Meet the amazing human making this possible:✨✨

Hi, I'm Esprit. Ive been a hairdresser for 9 years. I opened Snake Pit because I wanted to create a private, comfortable space where my clients could truly relax and feel cared for. I wanted a salon that focused on one-on-one appointments so every person feels seen, special, and taken care of.
Over time, I realized I cared more about helping people than simply making a profit. That mindset has opened doors to incredible opportunities and shown me that making someone feel beautiful and confident can have a lasting impact.
I have a special passion for working with the autism community, and people who might not want to leave the comfort of their own home for a haircut. I LOVE being a baby's first haircut, and providing haircuts in hospice care whenever im needed. Whatever is happening in our lives I believe everyone deserves to feel comfortable, respected, and beautiful.

Im partnering with Other Options and i have the opportunity to provide 6 free haircuts every thursday first come first serve. There will be a sign up sheet that you can fill your name out on. I do ask that you make it to your appointment that way we dont take up a slot that someone else could benefit from.

🎆🌭🐸 PSA FROM YOUR FRIENDS AT Other Options, Inc.🐸🌭🎆

We don't care if your holiday plans involve stuffing your face with juicy hot dogs 🌭, blowing things up 💥, or floating like a frog on a log at the lake 🌊🐸 please, PLEASE be safe this holiday weekend!

A few friendly reminders:

💥 Fireworks Safety
• Leave the big stuff to the professionals when possible.
• Keep a bucket of water or hose nearby.
• Never relight a firework that didn't go off.
• Keep children and pets a safe distance away.
• Fireworks and alcohol? Not the best combo, friends. 🍺❌💥

🌊 Lake & Water Safety
• Wear a life jacket even if you're a strong swimmer.
• Never swim alone.
• Keep constant eyes on kiddos near the water. Drowning is often silent.
• Avoid alcohol while boating or swimming.
• Stay hydrated and take breaks from the Oklahoma heat! ☀️💧

🐾 And don't forget your furry family members! Fireworks can be scary, so make sure pets are safely indoors with updated tags and microchips.

Whether you're grilling, chilling, boating, swimming, or making the night sky sparkle, we want every single one of you to have an amazing holiday and come back safe and sound. ❤️🤍💙

Have fun. Make memories. Be responsible. And for the love of all things beautiful, keep all ten fingers attached. 😜🎇

Happy Fourth of July from all of us at Other Options, Inc.! ❤️‍🔥
