Today is 988 Day, a reminder that no one should have to face emotional distress or a mental health crisis alone.

At Hough Ear Institute, we know that hearing health and mental health can be deeply connected.

Hearing loss can make conversations and relationships more difficult, sometimes leaving people feeling disconnected or isolated. For some people living with tinnitus, the constant presence of a sound no one else can hear can also affect sleep, concentration, mood, and emotional well-being.

These experiences deserve to be taken seriously—and so does asking for help.

If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline. Free, confidential support is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can also chat at https://ow.ly/6MOI50ZFUxw.

For veterans, call 988 and press 1 to connect with the Veterans Crisis Line.

For those living with tinnitus who are looking for ongoing community and peer support, our free Tinnitus Together Support Group provides a place to connect with people who understand. Learn more at https://ow.ly/xu3x50ZFUxx

This year’s 988 Day message is simple and important:

Your reason is reason enough.

Please reach out when you need help—and check in on the people around you.

Football sounds like home in Oklahoma. 🏈

The marching band. The fight song. A packed stadium erupting after a touchdown.

But there’s one game-day souvenir nobody wants: ringing ears.

Sporting events can reach approximately 94–110 decibels, loud enough that hearing damage can become a concern surprisingly quickly. The good news? Protecting your hearing doesn’t mean missing the sounds that make football fun.

From choosing the right ear protection to knowing when your ears need a timeout, we’ve put together a few simple ways to keep the cheers and skip the ringing this football season. 👂

And yes—earplugs belong right alongside the tickets, team colors and snacks on your game-day checklist.

Today, we had the opportunity to bring researchers and hearing health professionals together at OU for our Hearing Health Journal Club! 👂🔬

We were pleased to welcome Elizabeth Tobener, PhD, AuD, CCC-A, Assistant Professor at thOU College of Allied Healthth, who shared her research exploring the fascinating relationship between hearing loss, the vestibular system, and balance.

Her work is helping researchers better understand an important question: as hearing changes with age, what might also be happening to the systems that help us stay steady on our feet?

Dr. Tobener’s research has examined postural control in adults with age-related hearing loss, and her broader work focuses on vestibular function, balance, fall prevention, and the relationship between hearing loss and the balance system.

At Hough Ear Institute, teaching is an important part of our mission. Opportunities like today’s Journal Club give our staff and fellow hearing health professionals a chance to learn from one another, discuss emerging research, ask questions, and strengthen the scientific community here in Oklahoma.

Thank you, Dr. Tobener, for sharing your work and helping us all learn a little more about just how interconnected hearing and balance can be! 💙

🏈 Football season is back, Oklahoma!

The Sooners are getting ready to kick off another season, starting with a home game against UTEP on September 4—and we want to help a few football fans enjoy all the sounds of game day while taking care of their hearing.

College football is supposed to be loud. The band, the crowd, the touchdowns, the chants—that energy is part of what makes being in the stadium so much fun.

But sporting events can also reach sound levels high enough to put your hearing at risk.

So we’re giving away Hough Ear Institute-branded Hi-Fi earplugs that can help reduce the volume while still letting you enjoy the sounds around you. 👂🏈

TO ENTER: Comment below and tell us your favorite game-day sound or tradition!

Maybe it’s the marching band. The roar after a touchdown. The fight song. Or just hearing everyone yell, “BOOMER!”

Know somebody headed to a game this season? Share this post with them so they can enter too!

We’ll contact the winner directly by DM.

Enjoy the game. Protect your ears. And let’s hear some football! 🏈

Sometimes the impact of a program can be seen in the words people use.

We’ve been surveying HoughAid participants across Oklahoma about their experiences before and after receiving hearing aids—and the difference in their responses tells a powerful story.

Before HoughAid:
“Repeat.”
“Can’t hear.”
“Frustrated.”
“Left out.”
“Isolated.”

After HoughAid:
“Can hear.”
“Confident.”
“Involved.”
“Enjoy life.”
“Not alone.”

These aren’t words we chose for them. They come from the experiences our participants have shared with us.

HoughAid provides qualifying Oklahoma adults with clinical-grade refurbished hearing aids and audiology services at no cost, helping remove a financial barrier that can keep people disconnected from conversations, family, friends, and everyday life.

And none of it happens without our donors.

Every gift helps us continue providing hearing care to Oklahomans who otherwise may not be able to afford it—and gives us the opportunity to see even more words move from the left side of this graphic to the right. 💙

Help change the conversation for another Oklahoman.

Meet Cameron Collins-Pepper, our Development Manager! 💙

Cameron joined Hough Ear Institute in March 2024 after attending the University of Oklahoma, and she plays a big role in helping move our mission forward through fundraising, events, marketing, donor relationships, and management of our Young Professionals Board.

For Cameron, the work is deeply connected to impact. One moment that especially reminded her why it matters was hearing HoughAid recipient Barbara share how receiving hearing support helped her stay connected with the people and community she loves.

Of course, nonprofit development also comes with plenty of behind-the-scenes juggling. Cameron describes her role as managing grants, sponsors, events, last-minute surprises—and a healthy amount of caffeine. ☕️

When she’s not keeping all those pieces moving, you might find her listening to Bob Marley and the Wailers, John Mayer, Steve Miller Band, or an audiobook.

We’re grateful to have Cameron helping build relationships, strengthen community support, and grow the impact of HEI.

One roadside bomb changed Major Ed Pulido’s life in an instant.

A retired U.S. Army Major and Purple Heart recipient, Ed was wounded by an IED while serving in Iraq. In this video, he shares how the blast left him with hearing loss and tinnitus—and how the visible and invisible wounds of war affected him physically and mentally after he returned home.

His experience reflects a much larger challenge among those who have served. Tinnitus is the VA’s most common service-connected disability, and hearing loss is also among the most prevalent.

Major Ed supports Hough Ear Institute’s research because of the possibilities it may open for future treatments—bringing hope to veterans and others living with hearing loss and tinnitus around the world.

Watch his story, and share it to help others understand: not every wound is visible. 💙

We are saddened by the passing of Dolly Parton, whose unmistakable voice, songwriting, generosity, and warmth touched generations of people around the world.

For more than six decades, Dolly gave us songs that became part of the soundtrack of people’s lives—from Jolene and Coat of Many Colors to I Will Always Love You. But her legacy reached far beyond music. Through her philanthropy, including the Imagination Library, she helped give millions of children greater access to books and learning.

At Hough Ear Institute, we talk often about how sound connects us to memories, people, places, and moments. Few artists demonstrated the power of that connection quite like Dolly Parton.

Her voice may be gone, but the songs, memories, kindness, and joy she shared will continue to be heard for generations.

Rest in peace, Dolly. 💙
