S.H.I.N.E. = Start Helping Impacted Neighborhoods Everywhere

SHINE crews assist neighborhoods, schools, parks, and other public entities by cleaning up roads, waterways and removing graffiti.

SHINE is a restorative justice effort that offers an alternative to incarceration by providing a community service program that works to beautify Oklahoma County. Begun and implemented by Oklahoma County Commissioner Brian Maughan, SHINE offers alternatives to incarceration, helps to beautify the district, and builds pride in neighborhoods, while stewarding Oklahoma tax dollars well. This restorat

ive effort brings together both public and private organizations to strengthen the quality of life in Oklahoma County and to offer rehabilitation and restoration to non-violent offenders, which supports the decrease in the state’s incarceration and recidivism rates.

Thank you to the thousands of people who showed up for the Air Supply SHINE concert at Winstar Saturday night! A special thank you to Chickasaw Nation for hosting the event and to Air Supply. It was a great way to celebrate SHINE’s 16th anniversary.

We are so thankful for the $2000 donation for the Students for SHINE program by the ladies at Mabel Bassett prison that came from their marathon they did in memory of Safari McDoulett. Safari founded the program just ten months before she was tragically killed by a person under the influence. Many of these ladies have been convicted of a similar charge. Their tribute to Safari and other deceased victims was touching and healing.

Just one example of the work SHINE participants are doing across Oklahoma County every day.

This week, SHINE participants were out on Virginia Ave. picking up litter, removing dumped trash, and helping keep Oklahoma County looking its best. This is just one of the many projects crews have completed across the county this week.

As we near the end of this year’s Students for SHINE recognitions, we’re proud to celebrate the students of Santa Fe Pathways for their incredible commitment to serving others!

Together, 58 students completed an impressive 9,830 hours of community service through the Students for SHINE program.

A special shoutout to Azael Moreno for contributing an outstanding 616 service hours!

10,698.35 hours of service. One incredible group of students!

This week Commissioner Maughan recognized Dove Science Academy students for their dedication to community service through the Students for SHINE program. Together, they contributed more than 10,600 volunteer hours to our community.

A special shoutout to Fatima Rangel-Villanueva, who completed an incredible 1,855.5 service hours!

84 ASTEC High School graduates, more than 10,000 hours of community service, and not even enough room on the stage for them all!

Commissioner Maughan was honored to recognize these incredible Students for SHINE graduates this week for their hard work and dedication to making our community a better place. With so many graduates being recognized, we had to take the photo from the audience because they simply could not all fit on stage, what an amazing problem to have!

We could not be more proud of these students and the impact they are making through service to others. Keep shining, ASTEC! ✨

The Students for SHINE graduates at Western Heights last night did over 6500 hours of volunteer service to the community. They were the first school to sign up for the program 15 years ago and have produced more graduates than any other school in the county for the SHINE program. We were honored to have Madison Bryant, the cousin of the late Safari McDoulett, join us on stage to present the cords. Safari created the Students for SHINE program and signed up Western Heights as our first participating school.

One of the best parts of the Students for SHINE program is recognizing students who go above and beyond to serve others and make a positive impact in their communities!
