The Oklahoma Compost and Sustainability Association (OCASA) first started in 2015 as the Oklahoma Compost Conference planning committee, then became a non-profit in January 2021. Our goal continues to be to open discussions about how compost can benefit local communities, buisnesses and the environment. Our annual fall conference remains our premiere event, but we're expanding into other educational and advocacy roles as well!

🗣️MEET OUR FIRST CONFERENCE KEYNOTE SPEAKER🙌

Please give a warm welcome to Layel Camargo-Velásquez! Layel holds indigenous roots to the Yaqui/Yoeme people and is a cultural strategist, communications and marketing professional whose work spans climate justice, storytelling, land stewardship, and ecological restoration.

Composting has long been a through line in Layel’s personal and professional practice, not simply as a method of managing waste, but as a model for transformation, regeneration, and reciprocity with the Earth. As the founder of Woke n’ Wasteless, an early digital platform exploring waste reduction through the experiences of people of color, Layel advocated for composting and low-waste living as accessible forms of climate action. This commitment continues to inform their work connecting cultural change, environmental justice, and the restoration of healthy relationships between people and the land.

Layel is the co-founder and former Executive Director of Shelterwood Collective, an 878-acre forest restoration and land-stewardship project centering Black, Indigenous, LGBTQ+, and disabled communities. They helped lead fundraising for a five-year, $20 million campaign, including the acquisition of a $4 million forested property, while directing the organization’s communications and arts and culture programs.

Layel currently serves as Director of Communications and Marketing for a local large scale composting company in Austin, TX, called Break it Down.

You won’t want to miss Layel’s riveting keynote titled, “The Stories, Cultures, & Connections that Shape Our Futures.” More details on what the talk entails soon!
