Reach Out and Read Oklahoma

Reach Out and Read Oklahoma Reach Out and Read creates moments that matter by integrating reading aloud into pediatric care.

Founded in 1989, Reach Out and Read’s model includes providing a new, age-appropriate book for each child to take home at every checkup from 6 months through 5 years. Along with the free book for every child, doctors and nurses offer guidance to parents about the importance of reading aloud with their children every day. Nationwide, Reach Out and Read doctors and nurses serve 5 million children an

d their families annually at nearly 5,000 pediatric practices, hospitals, clinics, and health centers in all 50 states, with a focus on health centers that serve low-income communities. In Oklahoma, more than 300 medical providers are giving new books and literacy guidance to more than 57,000 children and their parents each year. Reach Out and Read is a proven intervention, supported by 15 independent, published research studies. During the preschool years, children served by Reach Out and Read score three to six months ahead of their non-Reach Out and Read peers on vocabulary tests, preparing them to start school on target. In the past, Reach Out and Read has been honored for its impact on literacy by organizations including the American Hospital Association and the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization.

Thank you Oklahoma Children's Hospital OU Health for your support of our model! Together, we are creating a brighter future for ALL Oklahoma children. ✨🩺📚

At Oklahoma Children’s OU Health, healing goes beyond medicine. It also happens through connection. One powerful way we support that connection is through the Reach Out and Read program.

Through Reach Out and Read, providers like OU Health pediatrician Dr. Marny Dunlap bring the joy of reading into everyday care by sharing books with families during visits and encouraging reading at home.

Dr. Dunlap has been a driving force behind this work, helping launch Oklahoma Children's Reach Out and Read program back in 2001. Since then, her leadership has helped embed early literacy into pediatric care across our system.

These small moments make a big impact. Reading together supports language development, strengthens growing brains, and helps children build strong emotional bonds with their caregivers.

In the clinical setting, reading can also:
📚 Ease stress and anxiety during visits
📚 Create meaningful bonding moments for families
📚 Help children feel more comfortable and engaged
📚 Support early literacy and school readiness

Programs like this show that when families receive books and guidance from their care team, children are more likely to be read to regularly and develop stronger language skills over time.

Whether it’s a bedtime story at home or a book shared during a checkup, these moments matter. They’re helping build stronger minds, healthier relationships, and brighter futures, one page at a time.

Simple. Effective. Scalable. Magical. ♥️🙌

Routine well-child visits are about much more than checking growth milestones. They're a chance to support your child's learning, language, and growing curiosity about the world. 💙📚

For many families, a pediatric visit is where a new book comes home and reading together becomes part of everyday life.

Because something as simple as opening a book is a powerful part of setting children up for success.
