The wood windows in our 1954 home on Belleview Terrace needed some attention. They had been caulked shut, the glazing compound was falling off, and the window lift struts had gone bad. The only good thing was that the wooden sashes were still solid. I removed the old loose glazing, and primed the bare wood with oil primer. Then replaced the outside glazing compound, waited weeks for the glazing compound to skin over, primed with oil primer and two coats of high quality latex paint. I replaced the lift struts (called spiral balances) with new spiral balances from Swisco. They look great again. With storm windows they are as thermally efficient as new double glazed windows.
