My (Anything) Backpack

Materials: Backpack outline, art supplies, magazines for collage (optional).

Invite the child to decorate a backpack and fill it with the things they want to "take" into the new school year. These can be strengths, coping skills, supportive people, favorite memories from summer, hopes, or encouraging words. Give this activity your own name, such as Magic Backpack, Brave Backpack, etc. Even better, let the child name it!

You can find free backpack images here.

Processing questions:
• What strength belongs in your backpack?
• Who helps you carry hard things?
• What is one fun summer memory you'd like to keep with you?
• Is there anything you'd like to leave behind before school starts?
• What do you hope to discover this year?

You can also draw items outside the backpack that represent worries and discuss strategies for managing them.

One of the joys of our playful community is learning from one another and the meaningful tools we carry into our playrooms. This month, Brandy Guidry, MA LPC-S, RPT-S™ shares one of her favorite therapeutic items and the powerful way she uses it in her work.

One of my favorite additions to my playroom are the SOLOBO Emotion Cubes. These colorful cubes make it easy for children to identify, express, and explore emotions in a way that feels playful rather than intimidating. I use them in countless ways! I’ve used them for check-ins at the beginning of session, for storytelling, role-play, emotional charades, coping skill games, and helping children connect feelings with experiences. I’ve had clients throw them and blast them away and hide them and hold them. They're incredibly versatile across developmental levels and encourage emotional vocabulary, self-awareness, and meaningful conversations. It's one of those simple tools that I reach for again and again!

What does being a play therapist mean to you?
Being a play therapist means honoring kids where they are. It’s about creating a space where they feel safe enough to express what they can’t always put into words, and trusting that healing can happen through connection and relationship.

What are your favorite play interventions?
I’m a big fan of bibliotherapy! Children’s books have a way of saying exactly what kids need to hear. They spark conversation, imaginative play, and those “me too” moments that can be so powerful in therapy.

How do you stay playful?
I stay playful by creating spaces where play is the point—especially through the trainings I host. There’s something energizing about inviting adults to step out of “clinical mode” and back into curiosity, creativity, and a little bit of silliness.
