Humor is one of the most effective tools in any type of communication—it builds rapport and trust, boosts engagement, and relieves boredom. If you’re presenting a serious topic, adding a joke lightens the mood and helps audiences relax and lean into the message.
But using humor successfully is a skill that often doesn’t come naturally. This is where Toastmasters can help. If your club wants to provide more opportunities for members to hone their funny bone, add a Jokemaster to your meeting roster.

Effective speech delivery is how you present your words, voice control, body language, and emotions to an audience. The key to success lies in the extemporaneous method—relying on a brief outline rather than a script to ensure your delivery sounds conversational, engaging, and authentic. Last Wednesday our speaker was Jeff Hoppe. He delivered an interesting speech about the rules of eating. Since Jeff likes travelling, he also likes learning habits and traditions of different cultures. It was a fantastic speech! Thank you, Jeff! We are looking forward to your next speech.

Last meeting in her Icebreaker speech, Sherry Aland delivered a fantastic message. Sherry told us when she was a kid, she was the quiet one in the room, the one who hoped that no one would call on her and usually tried to avoid eye contact when the teachers asked for volunteers. She definitely never imagined standing up to speak in front of anyone. Sherry grew up in a household where money, positivity, and encouragement were scarce, and she never really felt that some things such as carrier and success were within her reach. In spite of her shyness and fear to speak in front of the audience, while building up her successful carrier as CPA, she decided to step out of the comfort zone to face fear instead of running from it. That's how she started giving presentations, being on camera, and she even started her own YouTube channel.
She said that even today, that shy kid from Dixon sometimes peeps through causing her to wonder if she can really level up even more or if she has truly got something valuable that people would like to hear. That's why she is here today. Toastmasters is her next chapter: to continue learning and building real confidence in public speaking.
The power of speech in Toastmasters centers on transforming lives through communication, leadership, and confidence, moving from merely speaking to influencing and inspiring others. Founder Dr. Ralph Smedley noted that while we start by learning to make speeches, the true power lies in understanding and fostering peace through communication
Thank you, Sherry for sharing your expertise and breaking the ice with such an engaging, insightful, and memorable presentation. We are looking forward to your next speech!

Last Wednesday we had a great meeting. Our speaker was Priya Kadu.
The title of Priya's speech was “The Good Life, Lessons from the World's Longest Scientific Study of Happiness.”
In her speech, Priya said that happiness does not come from fame. It doesn't come from money. It doesn't come from success. But the key to happiness is relationship.
In conclusion of her speech, Priya said that today, her happiness doesn't come from a title or a paycheck. It comes from a loving husband, from supportive parents and from the community at Toastmasters.
Congratulations, Priya! You're on your way to great things!
“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” — Dr. Ralph C. Smedley

We had a wonderful meeting last Wednesday with two great speeches, two evaluations, and three table topics speakers. The theme of the meeting was National Grammar Day.
It was a great theme and spectacular speeches. Our first speaker was Kumar Mayank.
The title of his speech was “An Autobiography of a Photon.” It was a story about photon, the smallest traveler in space - small, but big in impact. A photon is an elementary particle and the basic unit that makes up all light. When we wake up in the morning and see the bright sunshine outside our window, we wonder where the sunlight truly comes from and how it reaches us.
Our second speaker was Priya Kadu. The title of her speech was “Multitasking.”
Multitasking is a lie and the tactic we've all been using to try and get more done every day is in actuality slowing us down and making us miserable. Deep work and focusing on one task at a time (monotasking) are more efficient and less stressful.
Kumar's and Priya's presentations were informative, engaging, and thought-provoking. I’m confident that their speeches will have a lasting impact on how we approach our work.
Kumar, Priya! Thank you for the knowledge and stories you shared today. You are truly an inspiration for us!
Your words had power, and they definitely made a difference today.

Singing at a Toastmasters meeting is a powerful, encouraged way to improve vocal variety, pitch, and confidence, acting as a dynamic tool for effective communication. It can be used in speeches, icebreakers, or to enhance presentations with humor and emotion, effectively boosting vocal flexibility.
Last Wednesday we had a great meeting. The theme of our meeting was Valentine Day’s Party. Our Toastmaster was Clyde Hughes, and he ran our meeting with music. As far as we know using music to run a meeting is a recognized and powerful technique to energize attendees, set the mood, and break the ice, whether in-person or virtual. Clyde successfully integrated music into his speech during the meeting. Since the theme was a Valentine Day’s Party, all music and songs were about love.
Well done, Clyde! Excellent meeting, excellent atmosphere!
You are our favorite Toastmaster!

Zack shared his experience in taking acting classes. He said there were two things he’d like to share with us. The first one was using emotion and being able to connect with others through that emotion. Even if we don't have the same one-to-one experiences, we have similar emotions in our day-to-day lives that we can share with other people. Emotional communication is essential not only for personal relationships but also for professional success. When we speak the emotional language of others, we not only help them understand us—we help them feel understood. The second thing is the importance of being a good listener. Listening creates a feeling of respect, connection and goodwill in personal and professional relationships. Author Mark Twain said, “If we were supposed to talk more than we listen, we would have two tongues and one ear.” Twain would probably not be surprised at the fact that the average U.S. adult only has an attention span of about eight seconds.
Great speech, Zack! We are truly grateful for sharing your experience on taking acting classes and looking forward to hearing your next speech.

Our first speech in Toastmasters is called the Ice Breaker. It is a 4-to-6-minute introductory speech allowing new members to introduce themselves, share personal experiences, and practice basic speech structure. Last meeting our best speaker was Priya Kadu. She successfully delivered her Ice Breaker speech, marking her first step in the Toastmasters Pathways program. Priya shared her amazing story about how she made her decision to become a dermatologist. She also discussed her self-discovery and the importance of holding multiple identities beyond her professional role. She said that when she realized the importance of stepping into her identity as a seasoned speaker, she decided to join Toastmasters. This decision was a significant step towards her personal and professional development, showcasing her commitment to learning and embracing new opportunities in public speaking.

The Ice Breaker marks the beginning of your new Toastmasters path. It is your opportunity to introduce yourself to the group and share something about yourself. It doesn’t have to be an autobiography. It can be a story about an event, something you learned or found interesting, or simply a story about where you are today and what you have learned since your last Ice Breaker. You may choose to share anything; from the reason you chose this particular path to something personal about your life.
Last meeting we had a great speaker Kumar Mayank. He joined our club one month ago and it was his first Ice Breaker speech. It is a fascinating and inspiring story about his personal experience in pursuing and achieving his dreams. Kumar comes from a humble background, and he grew up in India. After completing his master's degree, he moved to Alaska to pursue a PhD in Space Physics and Remote Sensing. According to his story moving from India to Alaska was a significant, multi-faceted life transition, blending extreme climate shifts with profound environmental, social, and cultural adjustments. But since he never gave up, he achieved his goals. Kumar said that he had joined Toastmasters because Toastmasters isn't just about speaking better. It's about building leadership, confidence and self-awareness. We learn to listen better, think clearer, and lead more effectively.

In Toastmasters, comparing a "bad" speaker to a "good" one is a powerful teaching tool often used in educational sessions or as part of the Better Speaker Series. To teach this effectively, a speech should demonstrate contrasting behaviors in Structure, Content, and Delivery. Last Wednesday meeting our speaker was Clyde Hughes. He is an excellent speaker and experienced educator. He delivered his two speeches using this technique. First speech was from a bad speaker, a speaker that could use some improvement and the second speech in contrast was from a good and experienced speaker who used deliberate techniques to create a meaningful impact and maintain engagement. Comparing a bad speaker with an experienced one Clyde highlighted key differences in preparation, delivery, and audience engagement.
Excellent job, Clyde! Thank you!
When you step to the podium or stand in front of a group, your words matter, but the way you deliver them matters more.
