Preeclampsia is a serious health problem for pregnant people around the world. In the U.S., it affects about 1 in every 25 pregnancies. While most people who have preeclampsia have healthy babies, this condition can cause serious problems. People who have preeclampsia are more likely to deliver their baby too early (before 37 weeks of pregnancy).

If you’re at high risk for preeclampsia, your provider recommends low dose aspirin. Talk to your doctor about your risk and whether low dose aspirin is right for you.

💬 Comment "reduce risk" and we'll DM you our preeclampsia warning signs list.

At 24 weeks pregnant with twins, Maddy Pedersen was admitted to the OB Special Care Unit at Oklahoma Children’s Hospital for daily monitoring. The goal was to make it to 32 weeks.

For six weeks, a hospital room became home.

At 27 weeks, Maddy’s water broke unexpectedly. From that point forward, she and Kyle stopped counting down to a delivery date and started focusing on one thing: one more day.

Every additional day the girls could grow was a victory. And through the fear and uncertainty, their nurses were there.

They checked on Maddy when she was struggling. They reassured Maddy and Kyle when they were scared. They celebrated the good days alongside them. Over those six weeks, their nurses became so much more than members of their medical team.

Experiences like the Pedersens’ are why we celebrate Nurse of the Year. Behind every award and nomination is a nurse whose skill and compassion have left a lasting impact on a patient or family.

The Pedersens are fundraising in honor of those nurses and the care that changed their lives.

Join us today in celebrating the rich culture, history, language, and tradition of Indigenous peoples. We also take a moment to recognize the ongoing challenges Indigenous peoples face in the U.S. such as discrimination, poverty, lack of access to healthcare and prenatal care, and more.

More than 25% of extremely low birthweight babies at Intermountain Health St. Vincent Hospital NICU in Billings, Montana are Native American. In an effort to provide culturally appropriate support, one of the things that the NICU Family Support team does is make moccasins from scratch for, and with, the families.

Together, we can all fight for understanding, respect, and health equity for Indigenous communities.

Olivia had a vision for her birth experience. As a doula, she felt prepared and hoped for a birth with minimal medical intervention.

But when her blood pressure became elevated, her plans changed. Olivia navigated an unexpected induction, relying on trusted providers, support and the information they needed to make the best decisions for their growing family.

Pregnancy doesn't always go according to plan, but understanding the signs, risks and options can help families feel more informed and empowered along the way.

Meet Maddy, Kyle, Drew and Hayden Pedersen, our 2026 March of Dimes Oklahoma Nurse of the Year Ambassador Family.

After infertility, pregnancy loss, fetal surgery, six weeks of hospitalization and a 62-day NICU stay, the Pedersens know firsthand the difference exceptional nurses can make for a family.

Throughout their journey, nurses were there for some of their hardest, scariest and most uncertain moments. They provided expert care, celebrated every small victory and helped Maddy and Kyle feel less alone. When asked who made the greatest impact on their experience, their answer was clear: nurses.

That is why serving as this year’s Nurse of the Year Ambassador Family is so meaningful to them.

The Pedersens are sharing their story and fundraising in honor of the nurses who helped bring their girls home and the incredible nurses making a difference for Oklahoma families every day.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll share more of their journey and the nurses who made such a lasting impact along the way.

When Erica was pregnant, doctors told her that her daughter, Nia, had a rare, lethal form of dwarfism and recommended she terminate the pregnancy. But Erica and her husband, Antoine disagreed and chose hope. After Nia was born, they learned she had been misdiagnosed. Nia spent 118 days in the NICU, underwent successful open-heart surgery, and is now thriving.

At a young age, Nia had experienced both Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and flu, but because Erica stayed on top of vaccinations and treatment, her symptoms weren't as severe as they might have been had she not been informed about preventive measures.

Did you know that most babies get Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) before their second birthday? While most healthy infants experience mild, cold-like symptoms, some are at risk of severe RSV. This includes babies who have health issues or weakened immune systems, are in daycare, or are exposed to secondhand smoke.

Talk to your baby's healthcare provider in Oklahoma City about ways to prevent RSV, especially if your baby falls into a high-risk category. Stay informed by learning about preventive measures that can help keep your baby safe and healthy.

Born at just 25 weeks and weighing only 1.8 pounds each, twins Peter and Andrew faced impossible odds from the very start.

The next morning, baby Andrew passed away peacefully in his father’s arms. As Kelly and Billy grieved the loss of their son, Peter began a grueling seven-month battle in the NICU.

Kelly spent countless long, quiet days by Peter’s bedside. In those moments of deep isolation, simple acts of care, compassionate nurses, and vital support from March of Dimes helped carry them through the unimaginable.

Today, Peter is a joyful 4-year-old preschooler who loves music, laughs constantly, and continues to defy the odds every single day. As they honor Andrew’s memory, Kelly and Billy hope other NICU families know they don’t have to face this alone. 💜

“At 24 weeks I thought, ‘there's no way I'm going into labor right now.’”

But Ramsey Wheeler was in labor, and hours later, her son Cameron was born at just 24 weeks and 1 pound, 11 ounces.

Cameron spent 172 days in the NICU, facing heart surgery, oxygen support and feeding challenges. For Ramsey and her partner, Brandon, the experience was overwhelming and isolating.

Through March of Dimes NICU Family Support®, the family found comfort, connection and support when they needed it most.

This NICU Awareness Month, we’re sharing Cameron’s story to shine a light on the realities families face in the NICU — and the importance of making sure no family has to navigate that journey alone.

Today, Cameron is a curious, playful toddler who loves to crawl, climb and flip through books. 💜

For 25 years, NICU Family Support® has been there for families when they need it most. Today, we’re honoring NICU nurse and dad John Glenn, whose own experience inspired him to volunteer with March of Dimes. He facilitates a virtual support group for dads through the NICU Family Support, reminding fathers they don’t have to navigate the NICU journey alone.

Since 2001, we've reached more than 1.25 million NICU families across the country, helping them feel informed, supported, and less alone during some of their most difficult days. This year, we're celebrating 25 years of NICU Family Support® by honoring the families, healthcare providers, and partners who have made this work possible.

Together, in Oklahoma City and across the nation, we're building a future where every NICU family gets the support they need, today and for generations to come. 💜

In the U.S., it affects about 1 in every 25 pregnancies. While most people who have preeclampsia have healthy babies, if it is not treated, it can cause serious problems such as preterm birth and even death.

You can have preeclampsia and not know it, so go to all of your prenatal care visits, talk to your doctor about your risk, and ask if low dose aspirin is right for you.
