In September, street papers around the world gathered at the International Network of Street Papers Summit in Scotland. To close out the event, the 2026 INSP Awards recognized the best in street paper journalism and their community projects. The contest saw 106 entries in total from the global street paper movement.

This year, the Curbside Chronicle was recognized with an award for Best Article. We’re proud to share first place with The Contributor in Nashville, a street paper that inspired our founder to bring the idea to Oklahoma.

The winning story was written by Nathan Poppe + Miguel Rios.

Oklahoma remains one of the hungriest states in the U.S. We’re thankful for the chance to raise more awareness around food insecurity, an issue that can impact people from the moment they wake up in the morning but isn’t always easy to see.

This week, the Curbside Chronicle welcomed a new staff writer. Adam Kemp is a longtime writer and journalist based in Oklahoma City.

Kemp recently worked at PBS NewsHour under The Communities Initiative, a project aimed at highlighting often under-told stories across the U.S. He also worked at The Oklahoman for nearly a decade.

Throughout the years, Kemp has contributed freelance work for Curbside touching on public transportation and voter apathy.

Be on the lookout for his reporting next month inside the November issue of Curbside as we explore 20 years of tattoos being legal in Oklahoma. We’re looking forward to it and a lot more stories in the near future.

New month! New magazine! 📘 The October issue of Curbside just hit the streets of Oklahoma City. The entire issue is dedicated to getting you ready for the local and national elections 🗳️ happening on Nov. 3.

We understand that voting can be intimidating 🙇‍♂️ for residents who are new or already familiar with the process. Our nonpartisan coverage hopes to make it easy to learn about candidates 🇺🇸 and what their roles mean in your daily life. Before you know it, we’ll have a new governor, superintendent of public education, attorney general and more.

Housed or not, people rely on pets 🐕 for everything from companionship to pint-sized security systems. In our September issue — which still has a free admission pass inside of it — a few Curbside vendors share all about their furry 🐶 friends. Swipe to read Geovany’s reflection on his dog, Midnight.

For someone experiencing homelessness, a pet isn’t just a pet — it’s a reason to keep going. You can help by donating new pet supplies 🐾 to Curbside. We have a need for dog food, cat food, collapsible water bowls, leashes, collars and harnesses 🐕‍🦺 in all sizes.

Donations can be dropped off at Curbside Flowers — located at 522 N Classen Blvd. — on weekdays between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. as well as Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Here’s your friendly reminder that Saturday, Sept. 12 is the return of the Oklahoma Comic Arts Festival. If you’re new to the event, the Oklahoma Comic Arts Foundation crew is a big component of Curbside’s annual comic book issue. Their amazing crew of artists and writers help us turn stories from Curbside vendors into fully-formed comics. Just like the one we posted here!

Artist Sam Washburn and writer Matthew Viriyapah captured how D’Metryus found a passion for improv and a comedy community that’s got his back — no matter what. Give it a read or pick up a copy of the comic book issue at the festival's entrance.

AN UPDATE FROM OUR FRIENDS AT THE ZOO: The okczoo returns to normal operating hours ⏰ this Saturday, Sept. 5. Hours will go back to 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with final entry at 4 p.m. ZOOfriends 🐒 members will be able to enter the park at 8:30 a.m. until Sept. 7. The OKC Zoo will be open 🦩 for Labor Day, so come on down and enjoy the cooler temperatures with some wild fun! 🤩

Make sure to utilize their refillable water 💧 stations, standing sprinklers and splash pads located in the Children’s Zoo and Lotus Pavilion. They encourage guests to take breaks in the shade ⛅️ or in any of their air-conditioned buildings. There are also carts all across grounds selling ice cream 🍦 and other sweet treats to help you keep cool! Grab a copy of Curbside and head 🚍 to the zoo!

You’ve likely heard the news. Country singer-songwriter Dolly Parton passed away Tuesday in Nashville. She was 80.

Curbside featured the pop culture phenom multiple times over the years. Her thoughtful nature and humor shined the brightest when we republished her “Letter to My Younger Self,” which is a regular fixture in Big Issue. Swipe to read a short quote from that piece. It originally ran in our April 2021 edition. 

We also featured Parton’s Imagination Library, an incredible book gifting program that mails free books to children from birth until they’re ready for school. Over the course of three decades, she donated more than 330 million books across the globe. 

It’s the sort of gesture that perfectly captures how she never forgot about her humble roots. According to The New York Times, The Partons were so poor that Dolly’s father had to pay the doctor who attended her birth with a sack of cornmeal. Parton may have grown up without plumbing, heat, electricity and other modern conveniences, but she always insisted that she also grew up happy, and that music offered her a refuge from want.

Dolly, we will always love you. 💛

Have you picked up a copy of our August edition yet? We wanted to share one of the 10 original comics you can find inside. Each story was inspired by Curbside vendors and their lives. 💥🦸🎭💚

What’s this one about? Well, mental health 🧠 can be a tricky hurdle no matter your station in life. In this comic, a Curbside vendor named Matthew uses a rock 🪨 as a metaphor for turning hard days into something manageable. At the time, Matthew had been staying at a local shelter, which can be a tough place to find rest. This vendor uses a Thor-like hammer 🔨 to chip away at his problems and finds some silver linings.

Who drew ✍️ it? Norman-born artist Nick Hermes. He is an oil painter with an emphasis on portraits and landscapes. He’s also the creator of the ongoing comic, “The Black-Jack Demon,” which is published by Literati Press. Blaze Stark wrote the script based on an interview by Curbside’s editor, Nathan Poppe.
