St. Benedict’s has been blessed to partner with Willow Pregnancy Center in supporting mothers, children, and families in our community. Through the generosity of our parishioners, we donate diapers, formula, coats, and other essential items to help meet the needs of local families. This year marks our fourth year participating in Willow’s Coats for Kids program, which has been a tremendous success each year. We are grateful for the opportunity to continue this ministry of love and service, sharing Christ’s love through practical acts of compassion and care for those in need. We will be collecting Donations until Nov 5th, they can be placed in the black bins in the church hall.

Sunday, September 27 is the Feast of the Elevation of the Cross. It is also a fasting day.

For the all church potluck to celebrate the feast that day, the sisterhood has chosen “herbs.” This is because a traditional way to adorn the cross for the this feast is with basil.

When I first suggested this to the sisterhood officers I got wide eyes – but a few things:

Herbs – this includes things like thyme, basil, parsley, sage, cilantro, mint, dill, etc. Basically – anything small and green you might add to your food for flavor. You can either cook something you normally do with these herbs, or add some to a recipe – one person is making a salad and is going to throw some parsley into it.

Garnish is fine also – maybe some sorbet topped with a mint leaf!

There are recipes that will be set out in the narthex tomorrow if you really can’t think of anything and want to cook.

If you are NOT a cook, we also have some ideas: Dill pickles, Herb flavored crackers, Dill potato chips, basil pesto hummus, oil infused with basil and bread to dip into it.

For drinks – an idea we had was ice tea with mint. However, other drinks are certainly fine, as we need to replenish our stock.

In fact, it is more important to have food at all than to have food with herbs – so – if trying to make or purchase a dish with herbs seems too daunting – please just bring something else that is fasting! We just want a big feast to celebrate the finding of the cross!

All church cleaning this coming Sunday, September 20. Please consider staying to help clean up the mess we all make 😄 each week. We will officially start after coffee hour. However, if you need to leave earlier than that, please speak to Lorraine (Gertrude) to get a job assigned and get that done before you leave - you are welcome to start early - just not DURING liturgy of course.
