63 years ago this week, something extraordinary happened in Birmingham, Alabama. On May 2, 1963, more than a thousand Black children — some as young as six years old — walked out of their classrooms and into history. 👣✊

They called it the Children's Crusade.

Armed with nothing but conviction and courage, they marched downtown singing freedom songs, ready to face whatever came. On May 3rd, Commissioner Bull Connor unleashed fire hoses and police dogs on children in the street. The world watched — and the world was changed.

Their bravery helped break the back of Birmingham's segregation and accelerated the march toward the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Dr. King called them "the most inspiring group of individuals I have ever worked with."

At the OKC MLK Alliance, we honor the fearless children who showed the world that courage has no age limit. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten. 🌟💛

As April comes to a close, we pause to reflect on an extraordinary month. 🌟

We commemorated the last speech Dr. King ever gave. We honored the anniversary of his assassination. We marked the birth of the Fair Housing Act. We remembered the letter written from a jail cell that changed a nation. We honored the funeral that moved a world.

This month reminded us WHY we exist. WHY the work matters. WHY we refuse to stop.

The OKC MLK Alliance is more than an organization — we are a community of conscience. And THIS community is just getting started.
