Carmen Romo is one of the women who will receive UNA-OKC’s “Women of Impact” award on June 20th at the Dove Event Center.

Here is a little about Dr. Carmen Romo:

Dr. Carmen Romo was born and raised in Ecuador. She earned her medical degree from the Universidad Estatal de Cuenca, where she later completed specialty training in Internal Medicine and Hematology. She further advanced her education by obtaining a diploma in Transfusion Medicine from Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja, Ecuador.
During her medical career in Ecuador, Dr. Romo served as Director of the Red Cross Blood Bank and later as Director of SOLCA in Machala, one of the country’s leading national cancer institutes.
In 2002, Dr. Romo moved to Oklahoma City and began her involvement with INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center as a volunteer before joining the Hispanic Initiative team. Throughout her time at INTEGRIS Health, she held numerous leadership roles including Marketing Coordinator, where she operated the Hispanic Health Line; Community Health Educator, Supervisor, and Manager; Director of the Hispanic Initiative; and Manager of Community Benefit Hispanic Outreach.
Over more than 20 years at INTEGRIS, she developed strong community partnerships and managed multiple programs such as cancer support groups, diabetes education classes, chronic disease management programs, and numerous health fairs across Oklahoma. She also organized mobile clinics and served as manager of the INTEGRIS Community Clinic.
In addition to her healthcare leadership, Dr. Romo writes health articles for local newspapers, frequently speaks at conferences, and provides public health consulting.
What impact has this work had on individuals, communities, or systems?
Romo’s work has helped individuals gain access to preventive care, early screenings, and health education, empowering many women to manage their health and navigate the healthcare system with confidence. At the community level, her outreach reduced language and trust barriers, encouraging families to seek regular care and build healthier habits. At the systems level, she helped establish interpreter services, community clinics, and sustainable outreach programs that improved equitable healthcare access for underserved populations across Oklahoma.
How does this nominee demonstrate leadership, courage, or innovation in advancing women empowerment?
Dr. Carmen Romo demonstrates leadership by creating programs that address the unique health needs of Hispanic women, guiding teams, and building partnerships across organizations. She shows courage by advocating for underserved communities and breaking language and cultural barriers in healthcare. Her innovative approach includes mobile clinics, culturally tailored education programs, and community support networks that empower women to take charge of their health and wellbeing.
How does the nominee’s work reflect the humanitarian and human rights values of the United Nations?
Romo’s work reflects the United Nations’ principles by promoting health as a fundamental human right and ensuring equitable access to care for all, especially marginalized and immigrant communities.
Through education, outreach, and advocacy, she reduces disparities, empowers women to make informed health decisions, and strengthens community resilience — advancing dignity, equality, and wellbeing in line with humanitarian and human rights values.
Our “Women of Impact” awards program will be on Saturday, June 20th, at the Dove Event Center in Oklahoma City. The program will feature entertainment, inspiring messages, good food, and excellent company.
