On September 29, 1948, George W. McLaurin filed a suit against the University of Oklahoma after being denied admission to its graduate program in education solely because of his race.

Although McLaurin was allowed to attend the program, it was on a segregated basis. The fight continued until 1950, when the Supreme Court ruled that the university's segregation policy was unconstitutional because it violated his 14th Amendment right to equal protection under the law.

This case helped lay the groundwork for the fight for equal access to education in the United States.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, the Freedom Center of OKC, would like to recognize Rosa Quiroga King, Delores Huerta and Arturo Alfonso Schomburg.

The legacy of these phenomenal Hispanic Americans continues to inspire generations of leaders through continued publication, advocacy and the preservation of history for their cultures and communities.

The Freedom Center of Oklahoma City will be closed Monday, September 7, 2026 to observe labor Day.

Normal operational hours will resume on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

Today marks the 63rd anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.

The historic march was held on August 28, 1963, to fight for racial and economic equality in the United States. It was also the event where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech to more than a quarter million attendees.

The historic event was attended by Clara Luper and members of the Oklahoma City NAACP Youth Council, who chartered two buses from Douglass High School in Oklahoma City, OK to attend the march in Washington, DC.

It was an incredible celebration commemorating the 68th anniversary of the historic Sit-In Movement in Oklahoma City while honoring the courage and legacy of Clara Luper and the 13 original sit-in participants.

Your vote matters.

Oklahoma's primary runoff elections are today.

Polls are open from 7am to 7pm.

This runoff election will include races to select candidates for governor, state superintendent, labor commissioner, insurance commissioner, U.S senate, state representative and state senate seats.

All registered voters will be able to weigh in on State Question 844 - Property Tax Exemption Reimbursement Changes & State Question 846 - Voter ID Requirement in the Constitution.

We want to congratulate the Clara Luper Legacy Committee on an incredible Freedom Fiesta Celebration commemorating the 68th anniversary of the historic Sit-In Movement in Oklahoma City and honoring the courage and legacy of Clara Luper and the 13 original sit-in participants.

This year’s theme, “Unity in Times Like This,” served as a powerful reminder of the importance of community, collective action, and continuing the fight for freedom and justice.

Over four impactful days, the committee worked tirelessly to bring the local and national community together through engaging events and activities that not only celebrated this historic legacy but also raised awareness of the Oklahoma City Sit-In Movement and its lasting impact.

Thank you to the Clara Luper Legacy Committee and everyone who helped make this year’s Freedom Fiesta a meaningful celebration of history, unity, and community. May we continue to honor the legacy of Clara Luper and her Diamonds by ensuring their story is never forgotten.
