Stereotypes & generalizations about all people groups are hateful & unloving at best. The same is true about the homeless population. While their are certainly instances & cases related to homelessness that should be addressed & need to change that we often see splattered on the news or internet, there’s a lot you don’t see - the humanness of homelessness.
As Christians we have an inherent expectation to view all people (including the homeless) as ‘image-bearers’; image bearers of their Creator, God. When we do this we remove labels from others who aren’t like us & see them for what they are at their core - a reflection of God. Albeit, an imperfect, flawed, very much human reflection (like us all). But, valuable.
There’s a reality of homelessness that is very real & very apparent when you make a conscious decision to step into that world for even just a few moments consistently. It may sound a bit simplistic, but it’s both crucial & valuable to remember - homeless people are…people. They have the same basic needs you & I have, it might just look different.
So, be kind. Be loving. Treat them as the image-bearers they are.
In this video are two ladies we know & love. The woman on the ground is blind. Last night she slept on our porch, again. When she woke up her wheelchair was gone. After helping her with food & clothes we escorted her to the corner where she spends most of her day in the shade. Upon dropping her off & leaving the lot I looked up & saw another woman we know…bathing her. Wiping her down. Cleaning off the dust, sweat & heat of the day. But not just bathing her. She is acknowledging her value. Her intrinsic, God given value; an image-bearer.
