May 15, 2026, is designated as Endangered Species Day. On Endangered Species Day, we’re reminded that protecting wildlife goes hand in hand with protecting water quality. Clean water is vital to biodiversity, and safeguarding endangered species often requires preserving the ecosystems they depend on — ecosystems that rely on healthy, sustainable water resources.

Oklahoma has both federally and state-listed endangered species that face extinction risks. Threats to these species include river channelization, surface water pollution, ground water pollution sedimentation, agricultural runoff, invasive species and habitat loss, disturbance or degradation.

Check out this list of Endangered and Threatened Species in Oklahoma!
