At last year’s inaugural SSQC Dinner & Auction, we had the privilege of presenting the first-ever Delmar Smith Lifetime Sportsman Award to the man himself — just a few months shy of his 99th birthday.

This Thursday, that award goes to our 2026 honoree, Dr. Dale Rollins. Two legends. One night worth showing up for.

Some people talk about quail conservation. Dale Rollins has spent a lifetime building it.
Dr. Rollins devoted over three decades to wildlife research and education at Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, founded the Bobwhite Brigade in 1993, a youth quail camp now running in multiple states, and helped establish the Rolling Plains Quail Research Ranch, one of the most important bobwhite research operations in the country. He's been called a sage of the prairie. In Oklahoma & Texas, they just call him Dr. Quail.

On April 23rd at the 2026 Sooner State Quail Coalition Dinner & Auction, we are proud to present Dale with the Delmar Smith Lifetime Sportsman Award — the highest honor our chapter can bestow.

When we launched Sooner State Quail Coalition last year, we didn't have to build from zero.

We joined a family.

Quail Coalition is a Dallas-based organization built on a simple idea: keep fundraising dollars local, direct them to the conservation beneficiaries of your own choosing, and do it with virtually zero overhead. Today, the network spans 10 chapters and over 3,000 active members.

Sooner State is Oklahoma's chapter of that family. The newest. The northernmost. And we're just getting started.

The Covey is Growing!

One year ago, we set out with a mission: to ensure the future of wild quail and upland heritage right here in the Sooner State. After an incredible first year and a successful inaugural gala, we are officially launching our social media home!

We are a 100% volunteer-led 501(c)(3) dedicated to local conservation. Every dollar we raise stays focused on the research, habitat, and youth education needed to bring back wild quail in Oklahoma.
