Meet Mahki and Maleeha, siblings who attend our After-School Program.

We asked them a simple question: What do you love about Freedom City?

Their answers are different, but both give us a glimpse of what happens beyond the school day. Freedom City is helping students build relationships, grow in confidence, and creating a place where students feel comfortable being themselves.

Stronger Together: Feed the Children

A good partnership can start with a simple question: “What do you need?”

Feed the Children has consistently asked that question. This year, their support has provided $14,769 in in-kind donations to Freedom City, including food, supplies, books, clothing, backpacks, and more.

Those donations help us stretch our resources further and keep more of our budget focused on our students.

We’re grateful for a partner who listens, cares, and shows up.

What comes after high school?

This summer, Freedom City’s College & Career Readiness Program helped 41 students explore that question through career exploration, college visits, workforce-readiness activities, and conversations with professionals.

With funding from the NBA Foundation and our partnership with Securing the Bag, students had opportunities to connect their interests to real careers and begin identifying their next steps.

We’re proud of what students discovered—and excited to keep helping them see what’s possible.

You can help us keep showing up.

Last week, we shared Maverick and Siesha's story. This week, we're asking you to be part of more stories like theirs.

Your gift supports Freedom City's work across tutoring, after-school, summer programming, and the caring relationships that help kids grow.

Be someone in their corner. 💙

We wanted to share a little more of Maverick and Siesha’s story with you.

When Maverick first joined Freedom City’s After-School Program, he was nervous about being away from home and pretty quiet.

His mom watched something change.

He started coming out of his shell. His confidence grew. And he began to thrive.

For Siesha, Freedom City became more than a place for her son to go after school. It became a place where he was known, encouraged, and supported—and a place she could trust while she worked.

She told us that Freedom City “brought my child out of his shell, instilled confidence, and supported his education.”

This is why we believe in showing up.

If you haven’t read their story yet, we’d love for you to take a few minutes to hear it in Siesha’s own words.

Read their story:

When Siesha Reeves' son, Maverick, started kindergarten, she faced a challenge familiar to many working parents."My child had never been away from me or my family until he got to kindergarten," she shared. "It was a very hard transition for both of us."Like many young children, Maverick was nervous....

We love watching what happens when a child starts to believe in themselves.

Maverick joined our After-School Program as a kindergartener. At first, he was nervous about being away from home and pretty quiet. But over time, we watched him come out of his shell, grow in confidence, and thrive.

His mom, Siesha, told us that Freedom City “brought my child out of his shell, instilled confidence, and supported his education.”

Stories like Maverick’s are why we keep showing up.

Through In-School Tutoring, After-School and Summer Programs, and the caring relationships woven throughout our work, we help kids learn, grow, and know that someone is in their corner.

Right now, we’re asking our community to help us keep showing up.

You can be someone in their corner, too. 💙

“Freedom City brought my child out of his shell.”

When Siesha's son, Maverick, started kindergarten, he was quiet, reserved, and nervous about being away from home after school.

Over time, she watched him grow, not only in confidence and friendships, but academically, too. And while Maverick was learning and growing, Siesha had something every working parent needs: peace of mind knowing her son was safe, supported, and cared for.

For Siesha, Freedom City has become more than an after-school program. It's a trusted partner for her family.

We’re grateful she shared her story and reminded us why this work matters. ❤️

☀️ Summer learning can be full of fun, discovery, and adventure.

This summer, approximately 50 students joined Freedom City's Summer Learning Program, reaching capacity for the first time!

Our students practiced reading and math, worked on their summer assignments, explored weekly themes, discovered new interests, made friends, and, most importantly, had plenty of opportunities to simply enjoy being kids. From animals and nutrition to sports, careers, colors, and the human body, learning happened in all kinds of ways.

We’re proud of the summer our students had and grateful to the families, staff, volunteers, and supporters who made it possible. ❤️
