📢 FACT CHECK: SB 484 and Homeless Services in Oklahoma

The Oklahoma Senate recently passed , a bill that would effectively ban homeless shelters in every city except Oklahoma City and Tulsa. The bill now heads to the House, where you have a chance to stop it. Here's what you need to know:

❌ MISINFORMATION: "Only OKC & Tulsa get funding for homelessness services."
âś… FACT: 8 regions across the state get federal homelessness funding based on need.

❌ MISINFORMATION: “No one will be transported.”
✅ FACT: The bill’s author said otherwise. Smaller towns would have to send people to OKC or Tulsa — shelters that are already full. This pushes folks out of their own communities.

❌ MISINFORMATION: "It's just a spacing bill."
✅ FACT: SB 484 would force shelters to be built more than half a mile from any school — further than the restriction for s*x offenders. That’s not spacing — it’s exclusion.

❌ MISINFORMATION: "This bill protects children."
✅ FACT: 23,000+ students in Oklahoma were homeless last year. Shelters help them stay safe & in school. SB 484 harms kids — it doesn’t protect them.

❌ MISINFORMATION: “Churches can handle this.”
✅ FACT: Churches do critical work — but they aren't equipped to handle the complex, long-term needs of homelessness.

We must center facts, compassion, and common sense in our policies. đź’¬ Let your House representatives know that Oklahoma deserves better than SB 484.
