Okemos Community Food Pantry

We are seeking a volunteer who could help once monthly with stocking the pantry. We receive a delivery from the Greater Lansing Food Bank on the 4th Thursday of each month at 8:00 a.m. It takes 1 to 1.5 hours to put the food away.

The Okemos Community Food Pantry is hosted by the Okemos Community Church at 4734 Okemos Rd. The pantry receives 3 orders monthly from GLFB and weekly orders from Meijer. We distribute 6-7,000 pounds of food monthly. Please call 517-349-4220 if you can help.

We had a busy, fun day at the pantry yesterday. A great deal of food went out the door. Our shelves were looking a little bare! We distribute between 6 and 7,000 pounds of food each month.

Donations of non perishable items are always welcome. We appreciate food with current “best by” dates. Donations can be dropped off M-Th 9-noon. For special arrangements call 517-349-4220.

Monetary donations can also be dropped off during those hours or be mailed to 4734 Okemos Rd., Okemos, MI 48864.

Perhaps you know of a business or organization that would like to do a food drive for us? Contact 517-349-4220.

This week marked one year since our pantry became a shopping pantry. Pantry neighbors are able to select items from our shelves. The quantity available depends upon family size. * Note the colorful stickers on the shelves, these tell our volunteers the amount of items to share! The positive feedback has been amazing!

Prior to being a shopping pantry, items were pre packed for clients. This led to people receiving items they did not need or want.

We are celebrating National Ice Cream Day on Wednesday with ice cream for our pantry neighbors!

Last week our pantry was able to secure nearly 1,000 lbs of food to assist our neighbors at Carriage Lane Apartments. The apartments lost power during the storm Friday and residents lost all perishables. Thank you Greater Lansing Food Bank for giving us an additional pick up opportunity!

Support Residents Displaced by the Carriage Lane Apartment Fire 🏠

On the evening of July 3, following severe storms that moved through the area, the Meridian Township Fire Department responded to a fire at Carriage Lane Apartments, a property managed by the Ingham County Housing Commission. While firefighters successfully contained the fire, the building sustained significant damage, resulting in the evacuation of residents.

Carriage Lane is home to approximately 100 residents, many of whom are seniors and individuals with disabilities. Meridian Cares assisted with the evacuation efforts, helping ensure residents were safely evacuated and accounted for.

The American Red Cross has established an emergency shelter for those displaced. At this time, there is no estimate for when power will be restored, and it remains unsafe for residents to return to their homes.

As a result of the extended power outage, residents have lost the food stored in their refrigerators and freezers. To help address this immediate need, Meridian Cares is collecting donations to purchase Meijer food-only gift cards so affected residents can replace essential groceries.
