Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed my bill, House Bill 4077, along with House Bill 4078 sponsored by Mike Mueller - State Representative, into law, marking an important step toward a more dignified and timely process for grieving families across Michigan. When someone passes away, loved ones deserve the ability to honor that life with dignity and begin the difficult work of saying goodbye, and this new law will help ensure the state does not stand in the way of that process. I was proud to be joined at the bill signing by funeral director Joe Buysse, Sarah Jensen-Vatter, and Mike Mueller - State Representative as this bipartisan effort officially became law. This new law requires physicians to electronically sign death certificates within 48 hours, helping reduce unnecessary delays for families during an already difficult time.

House Bills 4077 and 4078 were signed into law this week by Governor Whitmer—marking a major step forward in improving timely death certificate medical certification in Michigan.

MFDA extends our sincere thanks to State Reps. Julie Rogers (D - Kalamazoo) and Mike Mueller (R - Linden) for their leadership and partnership in advancing this important legislation.

MFDA President Sarah Jensen-Vatter was present for the bill signing and is pictured alongside Governor Whitmer, lawmakers and legislative staff who helped make this achievement possible. Also pictured is former MFDA Board Member Joe Buysse, who recently retired from Betzler Life Story Funeral Homes in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
