Delta Dental Foundation

Delta Dental Foundation Funding the research, people, and programs that improve health equity in oral and overall health. After all, everyone deserves a healthy smile.

At the Delta Dental Foundation (DDF), we know that oral and overall health are intrinsically linked. But for many people, the tools and education that can help keep their mouths healthy are often out of reach. Today, three out of four Americans report experiencing barriers to accessing dental care. That’s why the DDF is dedicated to developing and enhancing partnerships and programs to improve hea

lth equity in oral and overall health. Our areas of focus include increasing dental access to underserved and high-risk populations; identifying and reducing health disparities related to oral and overall health; providing educational programming on the importance of oral health and how it relates to overall health; providing scholarships and awards to dental students; and offering continuing education programs for the dental profession. But we don’t just fund great projects—we also take action on our own to ensure the work that’s necessary gets done. The DDF is a nonprofit, charitable organization established in 1980, which serves as the philanthropic arm of Delta Dental of Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana.

We're looking to build our Centers for Inclusive Dentistry (CID) network of nonprofit public health dental clinics in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. Clinics that complete this program help increase access to dental care for people with disabilities. As a CID, all dental staff undergo free, immersive training and join a learning community to collaborate and share best practices. Learn more at the link below.

For many people with disabilities, oral health is their number one unmet health care need. The Centers for Inclusive Dentistry program aims to change that.

"The thing that sets us apart is that we pay our students to learn," says Dr. Isaac Zeckel, dental director at HealthLinc Community Health Center. To meet a growing demand for dental assistants, HealthLinc launched a four-month paid training program that makes it easier for people to start a lucrative new profession while earning an income. So far, the program is making a difference: 12 new dental assistants have completed the program, enabling HealthLinc dentists to serve more patients and improve access to care. "We see patients every day who face a lot of obstacles in order to receive the care that they need. It's very important to be part of the solution," says Dr. Lisenia Collazo, dental director at Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center. To strengthen these skills, Dr. Collazo joined NNOHA - National Network for Oral Health Access's Oral Health Leadership Institute. The year-long program teaches safety-net dental directors about advocacy, managing budgets, writing policies and communicating with leadership. Read more at the link below.
