The American Dental Hygienists' Association's Annual Conference may be over, but the momentum is just getting started!

While at the conference, Delta Dental Foundation Executive Director Holli Seabury joined the Hygienist Rising podcast to share how Hygienist Inspired is helping dental hygienists turn everyday chairside conversations into opportunities to inspire the next generation of oral health professionals.

Conference attendees also got an inside look at the program during a special lunch and learn, and more than 150 people signed up to become Hygienist Inspired Allies.

Each year, MedWish MedWorks turns the floor of Huntington Convention Center in Cleveland into a dental and medical clinic staffed by an army of volunteers. Last weekend, that massive clinic provided free care to hundreds of Northeast Ohio residents. Before patients leave, they're connected with community resources and other healthcare facilities where they can receive affordable follow-up care. Last week, leadership teams from community health centers across Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Washington gathered in Detroit for NNOHA - National Network for Oral Health Access's Special Health Care Needs Learning Collaborative. With support from the Delta Dental Foundation and Arcora Foundation, participants learned how to strengthen access to oral health care for people with disabilities through quality improvement, systems change and team-based care.

How do we get dental care to underserved communities? Planet Smilez hosts one-day immersive experiences to introduce high schoolers to oral health careers in hopes of encouraging them to come back home to practice after school.

"It seems easier to train the people who already know and live in those communities rather than trying to incentivize outsiders to come in," said John Scharf, a second-year dental student at the University of Michigan.
