From November 4–7, 2027, Okeechobee will have the honor of welcoming the Vietnam Traveling Wall—an opportunity for our community to come together to remember, reflect, learn, and pay tribute to the men and women who served during the Vietnam War.
For many Vietnam veterans, the Wall is far more than a memorial. It represents friends who never came home, memories carried for more than half a century, and sacrifices that can never fully be measured. For younger generations, it offers something equally important: the opportunity to learn the human story behind the history.
Our goal is to make the Wall’s visit to Okeechobee not only a time of remembrance, but also a powerful educational experience. Alongside the Wall, we plan to create a variety of educational displays that will help students, families, and visitors better understand the Vietnam era, military service, life in combat, the experience of families at home, and the lasting impact of the war on those who served.
One of the most personal exhibits will be our “Letters From Home” display. We are asking Vietnam veterans and their families to share copies of letters written to or from service members during the Vietnam War. Originals are not needed and will not be retained. These letters will allow visitors to experience history through the actual words of the men and women who lived it—the words of young servicemen writing home, mothers and fathers waiting for news, husbands and wives separated by thousands of miles, and families holding onto hope.
A handwritten letter can teach something that no history book ever could.
Through these exhibits, we want students to understand that the names on the Wall were not simply names. They were sons and daughters, husbands and fathers, brothers, friends, classmates, and neighbors. They had dreams, families waiting at home, and stories that deserve to be remembered.
Contributions of any amount are deeply appreciated. In-kind donations of materials, equipment, printing, supplies, and other services may also help support the event. This is about more than bringing a Wall to Okeechobee. It is about bringing history to life. It is about giving a Vietnam veteran the opportunity to stand beside a name he has carried in his heart for decades. It is about allowing a child or student to read a letter written from Vietnam and realize that the young person who wrote it may have been only a few years older than they are today.
Most importantly, it is about keeping a promise to our Vietnam veterans—that their service, their sacrifices, their friends, and their stories will not be forgotten.
We invite you to stand with us and help create an experience that Okeechobee will remember for generations.
Honor the Fallen. Honor Those Who Returned. Educate the Next Generation. Never Forget.
With sincere appreciation,
Vietnam Traveling Wall – Okeechobee
