๐Ÿ“ฃ Extinct Critter Spotlight: Carolina Parakeet
The only native parrot to the eastern portion of North America used to inhabit our bottomland hardwood forests and cypress swamps, but it has now been presumed extinct for over 60 years. Though beautiful, the Carolina parakeet was considered a pest as it would feed on crops, and thus it would often be hunted for depredation - but also for sport, and for the collection of colorful feathers to adorn hats. On top of this, they faced habitat loss and competition for nesting cavities with the introduced European honeybees. Therefore, it is unclear what ultimately led to their extinction, though it was certainly due to human-related impact.

This month, we are focusing on extinct animals both prehistoric and more recent.

Whether it's the tides or the changing seasons, our salt marshes are constantly evolving.
-----
To better understand how these vital ecosystems respond to rising sea levels, the Port Royal Sound Foundation installed 12 Rod Surface Elevation Tables (RSETs) throughout the watershed in partnership with USCB. These monitoring stations help us track whether marshes are building elevation by capturing sediment...or losing ground to rising waters.

These stations will support student research and environmental education for decades to come.

๐ŸšจEndangered Critter Spotlight: Red Knot
In the breeding season up north, red knots stand out with their darker upper body and a rusty-red breast and face, though they may not appear as colorful during their migration through South Carolina. Their migrations are exceptionally impressive, traveling over 9,000 miles in the spring from the southern tip of South America to the Arctic in time for breeding. They are sandpipers, foraging by walking around with their beaks buried in the sand, looking for invertebrate prey. But they make a pit stop on our shores of the Lowcountry, looking to fuel up specifically on green horseshoe crab eggs! This nutrient-rich resource should be common in the spring as it is mating season for the horseshoe crab, but because of overharvesting and destruction of suitable breeding shoreline for them, red knot numbers have been dwindling as well. Though there is effort to preserve horseshoe crabs, and thus the red knot, they are still considered threatened under the Endangered Species Act.
