One mare. Two lives.

78 mares were dropped off to the auction from a recip breeding program in Oklahoma, where people pay to breed their horses with surrogate moms.

78 mothers that carried hundreds of babies. Show jumpers, ranch horses, children’s horses - you name and they probably carried their baby.

A “recip” (recipient) breeding program uses surrogate mares to carry and raise foals that are not genetically their own. There could be many reasons why these 78 were brought in, maybe the program got shut down, these mares become infertile, fail pregnancies, or are economically undesirable.

Whatever it is, all 78 are standing here about to ship across the border for meat consumption. And the owners that used these horses are not coming for them, it’s us or no one.

What frustrates us the most is that humans can use these animals so tiredly… and then have the ability to just throw them in the trash. Because that’s exactly what’s happened.

We choose to fight for this sweet mama. She’s emaciated, she’s pregnant, and she doesn’t know tomorrow will be her and her babies last day.

We need YOU to fight with us.

LET’S RISE UP FOR HER.
This gray mare came in and was sold directly for her meat price and immediately placed in the direct to ship pen.

She wasn’t even given the chance to go through the loose sale. Straight to S.

AND she’s pregnant.

This is a mother who should be in a safe pasture preparing to bring her baby into the world - not standing in a k*** pen, terrified and out of options.

Situations like this are so incredibly frustrating for us. Why? Who failed this horse so completely that their solution was to bring a pregnant mare here? I’m beside myself even writing these words.

She deserves a second chance. She deserves safety. She deserves the opportunity to have her baby somewhere secure and cared for. For the baby to be born into safety and set up for sucess. Adopted to a home that loves her wants to grow with her.

Right now, we are the only ones fighting for BOTH OF THEM. And we need you to fight alongside us.
Every amount, every share, every bit of support helps us get her out of the pipeline before it’s too late. Time is running out for this mare, and if we don’t step in, no one will.

June and your baby Fawn, we are honored to welcome you into your second chance at life.

A terrified reservation mom arrived to the auction on a semi truck packed with other wild horses after a 10 hour trip. She came in with her baby, Fawn, who was less than 3 days old, skin and bones. June was emaciated, starving, and not producing milk. Because Fawn was so tiny, she quickly came down with pneumonia from the cold transport and filthy k*** pen conditions.

This is the time of year when reservation horses are rounded up. Baby season means more money, drought is affecting the reservations, and there is profit to be made shipping them.

We were able to rescue both mama and baby, and that was so important, why? Because they would have been separated. June would have been shipped, and Fawn would have been left orphaned. Anything to make more money in the end.

We rushed Junie and Fawn to the ICU immediately after we secured them. Fawn needed colostrum and urgent treatment for pneumonia. They both spent a week in ICU, and once June was eating and started regaining her first bit of energy, she slowly began producing milk. That milk is vital for Fawn’s first weeks and months of development. A foal’s immune system starts developing at birth, but the first few months are crucial. A baby this young should never have to endure an auction.

They are now safe in quarantine, healing and decompressing.

Baby Fawn loves her naps in the sun almost as much as she loves staying close to her mom.

This happened because our Sun Horse community came together and believed in them. This is their second chance at life, a life where they will be safe, loved and cared for. Welcome to freedom 🤍
