Every spring and summer it happens on some porch or another. A bee the size of a thumb knuckle comes roaring off the eaves, hangs in the air a foot from a face, and follows whoever it caught near the nest hole halfway across the yard. The broom comes out. The spray comes out.

Here is what the broom never learns. That guard is a male carpenter bee, and male bees cannot sting. Not one of them. A stinger is a converted egg-laying tool, so only females carry one, and a female carpenter bee is so reluctant to use hers that you would nearly have to close your hand around her first.

The hole in the post is real, but it is a doorway, not a demolition. A shallow gallery, tidied and reused for years. Meanwhile the family spends all day working your tomatoes, your beans, and every open flower on the block. Carpenter bees are among the strongest buzz pollinators a garden gets.

So when the guard comes up to look at you, let him look. He is all show. He has nothing to poke you with. 🐝
