Every number is a life.
Every statistic is someone’s child, parent, sibling, or friend.

Substance-related fatalities continue to impact families across the United States at heartbreaking levels.

πŸ“Š Annual U.S. averages:

β€’ Approximately 105,000+ people die from drug overdoses each year in the United States. Fentanyl continues to be the leading driver of overdose deaths.

β€’ In 2024, overdose deaths were estimated at around 80,000 lives lost, which was still one of the deadliest years on record despite recent declines.

β€’ In 2025, provisional CDC data estimated nearly 70,000 overdose deaths nationwide.

β€’ Alcohol-related deaths in the U.S. are estimated at approximately 88,000 deaths per year when including disease, accidents, and injuries connected to alcohol use.

β€’ Tobacco-related deaths continue to claim over 480,000 American lives annually, making it one of the leading preventable causes of death in the nation.

⚠️ That means every single day:

* Hundreds die from overdose.
* Hundreds more die from alcohol-related causes.
* Over 1,300 people die from tobacco-related illnesses.

This is not just a crisis.
This is a call for compassion, collaboration, treatment, prevention, and recovery support.

At The Tommy Project, we believe:
πŸ’œ People deserve help, not judgment.
πŸ’œ Recovery pathways should unite, not divide.
πŸ’œ No one should die alone because they felt unseen or unsupported.

One conversation.
One act of kindness.
One connection to recovery resources.
One life saved.

When people in all pathways of recovery stop collaborating, the people who suffer most are the ones still struggling to survive.

Recovery is not one-size-fits-all. Some find healing through abstinence. Some through MAT. Some through faith. Some through harm reduction. Some through therapy, meetings, outreach, housing support, or simply having one person who refuses to give up on them.

But when we judge another person’s pathway because it doesn’t look like ours, we create division instead of healing.

What happens then?

People fall through the cracks.
People stop asking for help.
People feel ashamed.
People use alone.
People relapse in silence.
People die believing they are not worthy of support until they recover β€œthe right way.”

Calling compassion β€œenabling” without understanding the full picture can push people further from safety, trust, and connection. Supporting someone where they are at does not mean giving up on them β€” it means refusing to abandon them while they fight to survive.

Collaboration saves lives.
Judgment isolates people.

Every pathway has value because every human life has value.

We do not have to agree on every method to agree that people deserve dignity, support, hope, and the chance to heal.

The recovery community becomes stronger when we work together instead of competing over whose recovery is β€œright.”

Because at the end of the day, a living person has a chance to heal.
A dead person does not.
