Ogdensburg Garden Club, Inc.

Ogdensburg Garden Club, Inc. The Ogdensburg Garden Club takes care of 5 gardens around the city and sponsors the Youth Garden Club, the Maple Leaf Awards and does Garden Therapy.

The Club meets monthly (with the exception of January, February and March) on the first Tuesday usually at 12:30 pm. Each meeting consists of a program presented by an invited speaker or by a member the club who specializes, is experienced, or is well versed in the topic of the day. Sometimes these programs take the form of workshops in which the members actively participate, i.e. flower arranging

. Business matters are also discussed and there's a time for refreshment and socialization. The Club typically holds at least one meeting a year to which the public is welcome. The Garden Club has many projects throughout the year to ensure active participation. Some of them are: Civic Beautification – the maintenance of several public gardens in the City, hanging baskets and business planters; Garden Therapy; Maple Leaf Awards; sponsorship of the Youth Garden Club for children and teens. Approximately every three years the Club presents a Standard Flower Show. In other years there may be a Fall Sale of garden-related items or a Summer Garden Tour. Money received from the sale or garden tour help fund all the activities of the Garden Club. The City of Ogdensburg also supports this Club with a stipend which is used exclusively for the Public Gardens – seeds, plants, mulch, fertilizer. The Club is also assisted at times by the staff of the Parks and Recreation Department. We are most grateful for this support of our efforts to enhance the City by caring for the gardens and hanging planters. THANK YOU TO HANGING BASKET SPONSORS

The Ogdensburg Garden Club owes a huge THANK YOU to current and former Ogdensburg area residents and businesses who sponsored hanging baskets this year.

These beautiful baskets are now in place along Ford and State Streets. This year’s baskets were purchased from Terry Family Greenhouse and Nursery, Lisbon, New York.

THANK YOU to the Ogdensburg Department of Public Works for hanging the baskets and especially for caring for and watering them throughout the summer season.

The Garden Club is most grateful to all who have supported this summer’s beautification project and for the many kind notes received thanking us for what we do.

In addition to the basket project, the Ogdensburg Garden Club also plants and maintains the following public gardens – Library Park, Agarwal Garden, Arterial Garden and Kids’ Place, a part of the Re*****on Museum, where our Youth Garden Club members work and learn. We hope you take time to view and enjoy these beautiful areas in our city this summer. Be sure to enjoy our canoe display on State St. near the St. Lawrence Federal Credit Union, both in Summer and Fall!

I’ve killed a lot of plants over the last three decades. It’s part of the process. But it also teaches you to stop fussing over the fussy ones and start appreciating the plants that absolutely refuse to die. You don't need expensive soil amendments or complicated fertilizing schedules to get a show-stopping garden. You mostly just need to get out of the way of plants that actually want to grow. There is one native wildflower in particular that I genuinely believe belongs in every single yard. It thrives on neglect and poor soil. It blooms for brilliant weeks on end, not fleeting days. Its lingering citrus scent naturally repels ground pests, yet it causes hummingbirds to practically fight over your garden. Oh, and when autumn rolls around? You literally just run it over with the lawnmower to put it to bed. No delicate pruning required. But the most surprising part isn’t how ridiculously hard it is to kill. It’s what you can do with the leaves right in your own kitchen. Stop making gardening harder than it needs to be. I left a note in the comments with the name of this absolute workhorse and why you need it in the ground this season.
