Our Great Big Flag

Our Great Big Flag What we will do when Our Great Big Flag touches the ground. Our Great Big Flag will be launched and recovered in a grassy area.

Through support from others in raising Our Great Big Flag (OGBF) and with the ultimate goal of flying a 50 ft tall American flag via a helicopter around the area as often as possible " not only special occasions" Our Great Big Flag will touch the ground not due to disrespect or carelessness but just due to its large size. Below are a few links that break down what to do when the flag touches the g

round, of which guidelines we will follow. This is an excerpt from one of the links. " Under is the Flag Code, you can continue to display an American flag after it touches the ground, assuming it’s still “suitable for display.” (clean and serviceable)"

I exchanged this American about 2 weeks ago when we had some extra snow and cold weather. Came from Copenhagen, NY. Snow from the roof took the pole out. It will be displayed with the rest till it can be honorably disposed of. Any way still working to let people know that someday I (if not someone else) will be flying Our Great Big Flag (4000sft+) around NY and other states. Exchanging well honored flags for a new one is just one way. You want to send me a note.

A few days ago got to do some helicopter stuff and this was the closest parking spot. Hope they didn't mind. This is also the helicopter that'll eventually be flying the OurGreatBigFlag when enough support is raised to order it. Always thankful for those who have supported the OurGreatBigFlag (you know who are).

OK, are you crafty or maybe know someone who is. Because I am (Hopefully your state as well) looking for designs for the 250th Warts and All campaign sticker/patch and the campaign ribbon.
Here are the requirements: someway depict your state ( I am looking for NY), either the words "OurGreatBigFlag or the acronym OGBF, 250th and Warts and All.
Sticker/patch no bigger than say 5x5 and the campaign ribbon same ratio as OGBF (OGBF is 50ft x 83ish) no taller than 2ft tall and the leading edge needs to fit over a 1 1/2 pipe (they will be flown on OGBF banner). Although I am looking for NY, you can send one for your state, either via snell mail or email.

Thanks
Kenneth

OurGreatBigFlag shopping list (either bought with funds donated or if they are donated from a individual). They are not in any particular order.
The OGBF (flag) about $6000

An enclosed trailer to transport supplies/support equipment from place to place and with surge brakes so almost any vehicle can pull it safely with out special trailer hook ups.

Outdoor banners: one that says Home of Our Great Big Flag and a few that says Our Great Big Flag coming soon

Instant cameras: there seems to be several out there so any suggestions would be great. Looking for about 5, durability, ease of use and film availability

Paint: the paint is for touch up the OGBF flag/banner. when I am able to order the actual OGBF I will found out the type of paint.

Radios: hand held VHF used for communication helicopter and ground crew

The rest will be mostly office stuff.

Please remember that I could evidently get all the stuff needed fly OGBF but then it would be "MY" GREAT BIG FLAG and not "OUR"

Any help would be great, below are all the current ways to contact/donate

HELP RAISE OUR GREAT BIG AMERICAN FLAG

OurGreatBigFlag update continues
So how can you help?
What's most valuable is your time, whether volunteering for work, your expertise in a field that might help make the process go smoother, etc, etc. You can donate supplies some are quite pricey like aviation fuel down to writing supplies. If you have the means, maybe you take care of the volunteers with coffee in the morning (pretty sure that once we get things figured out it will be nonstop work). Another way is funding, you can donate via the Giverbutter fund or now there is a address you can send your donations to. I will post all the contact information at the end of this update.

Now on to the meat of the 250th Warts and All campaign. If we are able, the OGBF (flag and banner) along with all supplies and support equipment needed fly OGBF, will be passed from state to state through out the year and flown in as many places as possible with in their states. The order of states would be (if possible) the order they joined the union, ie Delaware would be first and Hawaii finish the campaignyou or your group wants to be an organizer for your state, the simple way is to send an email to [email protected] with a subject of OGBF (your state). In the body, a little about you/group and contact info to include a phone number. The number is just for initial contact so I don't play email tag (I don't use a smartphone). I will call you to make sure your/group is up for a challenge and answer any questions that I can. If more than one person/ group wants to be their states OGBF representative the first one will be the primary point of contact (for me) and I will contact the others via email.
There are a few task each state will need to (I will assist you in as much as possible to make your time with OGBF successful). Finding a secure place to fly OGBF, qualified helicopter pilot and recruit volunteers to help at your location. Coordinate (lots of coordinating) within your state and other states for sending/receiving OGBF and support equipment. Funding, not asking you to raise 10s of thousands. This is what you are raising funds for, aviation fuel (if not donated), admin stuff to restock for the next place, initial cost of merchandise (ie stickers, shirts, patches, etc).
Let's dig a little deeper into the merchandising, it's specifically designed by your volunteers to camerata your states part in the "Warts and All" campaign There are 2 items(others if you wish), and both with the same minimum requirements (somehow depicted your state, OGBF either the acronym or written out, 250th and the campaign logo "Warts and All"). One is a Warts and All sticker and patch which can be used raise funds, given away and so forth. One sticker will be put on the trailer and a patch will be sent back to Ogdensburg to be displayed. The other is a campaign ribbon (size same ratio as OGBF no taller than 2ft, leading edge fit over a 1 1/2in tube) , same requirements as the sticker but also add all the places OGBF was flown, they will be flown with the OGBF banner. There should be a minimum of 2 made, one remains with the state and the other sent back for display. When all is said and done all the states campaign ribbons will be displayed with OGBF and banner, a picture taken then posted for all to see and that's about it.

Here are a few positions to consider and for each one, if possible have a volunteer help ie assistant for the day:

Accountant: fundraising, marketing, etc

Secretary/historian: tracks numbers(volunteers, mission/hours flown), Warts and All letters read, number of names added to the OGBF banner and OGBF flag and anything needed to document your time with OGBF. Finally (should you wish) a no more than one page letter/poem/note, etc hand written or otherwise to the receiving state and what you write is up to you.

IT person(s): this is something I am not. Maybe vloger to help the historian document your OGBF campaign

Disk jockey: they would be the modern-day town crier, putting out announcements, maybe some PR works well. Responsible for playing the Star spangled banner before the day gets started, taps at the end of the day (from the playlist other have sent in or maybe karaoke style). Also songs, poems, letters folks have sent in. Anyone is incouraged to send whatever they would like others to hear [email protected] and be sure to give some info about you/group with what ever you send and it will be added to a playlist for the DJ to play/read. All I ask is that you do not butcher the Star Spangled Banner and America the Beautiful. I don't mean with a bad voice, don't try to make it your own version.

Aviation adviser: insures everyone knows how to work around helicopters, ie safety and limitations of the helicopter. Provide guidance of all drone operations if you or the location you are at allows drone operations. Assist the volunteer LS/PZ controller, be patient this may be a young person.

In closing there is alot to do, a lot of funding, a lot volunteers to find and a lot of time that we have less a less each day.

Thank you again for being a part of the OurGreatBigFlag family
Kenneth Wilson

PS: Why Painted flag/banner? With a printed banner it will continue to fade eventually it will need to be retired. With a painted banner we will have to maintained it, each year or so it will be touched up, sewed/patched as needed. Hopefully never to be retired, just show signs of respect.

HELP RAISE OUR GREAT BIG AMERICAN FLAG

08/03/2025

Greetings: this is a long update so I'm going to break it down into several smaller posts. I am asking for help with a few things I find hard asking for (help and money). These will be needed to send the OurGreatBigFlag (OGBF) on a campaign to be flown in all 50 states in 2026 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of our country.

The campaign will be called "OGBF 250th, Warts and All". I continue to gather resources here in Ogdensburg, NY to be able to fly OGBF. This will be a huge challenge, and there are 6 ways to Sunday on how it fails, but I am betting on the "with great risks comes great rewards" theory.

Let me backup just a bit to explain what OurGreatBigFlag is, is not, and what "Warts and All" is all about. The OGBF represents every American, from the past and into the future, who took or takes pride in what our flag stands for. What it is not: a political pawn that we care for only when it is convenient; and definitely not a social experiment. "Warts and All" means we accept (them, it, etc, etc) as they are, including all their faults. So it means we are proud of what OurGreatBigFlag stands for despite all of our nation's flaws (warts) ie "Warts and All".
How it works: example, someone in Alaska would send their Warts and All letter of what OurGreatBigFlag means to them, despite our nation's short comings. When received, a volunteer will read it, and if the sender has requested, their name(s) will be added to the OGBF banner. If they wish to honor someone who is no longer with us, yet has influenced them on what OGBF stands for, that name can be added to the trailing edge of the American flag, (not on the flag itself, but rather on the white material border at the trailing end, where all names are added). Next, the volunteer will take a picture of the names with an instant camera like the old Polaroids, then on an OGBF business card, put a dot where the name(s) are located on the respective flag/banner, add a signed note, put it all in the self addressed stamped envelope ({s.a.s.e} is one of the requirements) along with an OGBF sticker, and a Warts and All sticker. Finally the senders letter will be put in the book of "Warts and All" under their state for all to read.

Here in Ogdensburg, NY, I still have a few big items I'm working on to get funding for, and other minor tasks I'm working on. The biggest expense is the OurGreatBigFlag itself, (see quote below) and an enclosed trailer to carry all the supplies needed to fly OGBF. I will put out the complete shopping list along with the next update.
Also, earlier this year I had a medical issue that has made me well past 6 months behind on where I hoped I'd be by now. I'm currently waiting for the FAA to be cleared, but there is still a bunch of stuff to do that doesn't require flying. There might only be a few months of actual flying this year, but I will hit the ground running when able.

Below is the quote from Flysigns, the same place the OGBF banner came from:
"Hand Painted Flag = $5,175.00, plus shipping estimate of $850.00. "

Thanks to all who help.

Greetings a short up date on The Great Big Flag Project. To date OGBF has exchanged 8 ) 3x5, (2) 4x6 and (1) 6x10 flags. That is 228 sqft out of 4150. My higher math was off on the last post.

Greetings here is that latest on the goal toward getting OGBF flying. We are up to 9 flags exchanged. I looks like it might be a tough road in the purchasing Our Great Big Flag, SO OGBF will be about 4150 sqft. My next goal is to exchange enough flags that will equal 4150 sqft. To date 9 flags equal 269 sqft. I will post every time a new flag is added to the wall of honor. Thanks again

Well I hope all reading this is doing well. Before I go on I want to reinforce why the The Our Great Big Flag Project came to be, it is simply to honor our county, flag and all the people that work hard to make America a better place to live regardless of who you are or what your causes may be.
Although being a veteran I know there are many others who have paid a price for our freedom. I have attached an article about Arizona State University replacing the American flag with Juneteenth and Pride flags. The issue is not with the causes, it is the fact that our American flag has become just an advertisement billboard to be replaced as the next event comes, Would it be so hard to just add another flag holder below the American flag and change those out as need be thus continue honoring what our county stands for and to post other flags for causes and events as the community wishes?

Well it has been a while since my last post. I am now up to 6 American flags exchange (pic to follow). These are the towns in NY that have new flags on behalf of OGBF. Evans Mill, Calcium, Ogdensburg, Philadelphia, DeKalb Junction and Gouverneur.
