There's just something about the days we are able to get out to the farm for growth, connection, fresh air, and sunshine. I am incredibly grateful for these people, this space and the conversations that take place within it.

We want to honor our own Jeffrey Fister and his music program at SLPC for being honored as the NYS Inpatient Program of the Year!

Here are a few words from Jeff about the program he developed and has run at SLPC for the past five years:

Amy Sawyer and I started in 2021 when two peers asked this author to teach a real music group, we started with one guitar and 2 students and within a year’s time we had four to six students and played a live performance. From the beginning we helped many people reach their potential and added a new coping strategy to their well-being. in 2026 the program won a statewide award for inpatient program of the year.

The program has evolved from humble beginnings to a full-blown music area with drums keyboards and this year we played a live concert for 70 to 80 people. We hope to keep going well into the future.

As Mental Health Awareness Month draws to a close, we have spent a lot of time reflecting on the conversations, experiences, and moments we have shared together throughout the month at S.T.E.P. by S.T.E.P., Inc. But the truth is, the themes we focus on during Mental Health Awareness Month are not things we talk about only during the month of May. They are part of the work we do every single day at SBS through connection, self-reflection, support, growth, and community.

Today was one of those days just doing what we do. We had an awesome day at the SBS Farm today - rhubarb harvest, greenhouse meditation, and connection. And we have big plans in the kitchen for our rhubarb next week!

We go to the SBS Farm every Thursday and welcome anyone from our community to join us. If transportation is a concern, then simply give us a call and we'll make sure you get there!
