Thursday — Walk in Their Shoes

Imagine finally finding an apartment you can afford, but you do not have a birth certificate. You need it for ID; you need ID for the application; you lack transportation, replacement fees and a safe mailing address. One missing document can create a chain of barriers most of us never have to think about. This is why advocacy matters.

How does someone become homeless at 70? A spouse dies. Household income falls. Rent increases. Health changes. Work becomes impossible. A car breaks down. A landlord sells the property. Sometimes there is no dramatic event or bad decision. Sometimes it is simply math that no longer works.

We ordered new merchandise! I've been working on the www.radhero.org website, trying to spruce it up. I'm by no means a tech savvy gal, but I feel like I made progress today!

Imagine navigating homelessness while using a walker, managing diabetes, storing medications, standing in lines, using online applications with limited technology access, or trying to find accessible housing. Homelessness is difficult at any age. Aging changes the barriers. Every person deserves to age with dignity.
