We Are All Migrants Artist Feature:

SALVADOR JIMÉNEZ-FLORES

(United States History Yesterday, Today But Not Tomorrow), 2019
brass
24 x 24 x 4 in.

History is violent. In this work, the artist reminds viewers that although the past is filled with atrocities, the future is ours to make, and it can be different.

2) Las venas abiertas de América Latina
(Open Veins of Latin America), 2019
brass
24 x 24 x 3 in.

The title of this work comes from Uruguayan historian Eduardo Galeano’s 1971 book Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent, which describes the long history of U.S. political interventions and economic exploitation of Central and South America.

3) Las personas latinx existen en el futuro
(Latinx People Exist in the Future), 2019
brass and cast iron
24 x 24 x 4 in.

For those deceived by the myth of racial superiority, this work is a reminder of the resilient determination and steadfastness of targeted people groups.

We Are All Migrants Artist Feature:

DYLAN A.T. MINER
No Bans on Stolen Lands, 2017
digital print on polyester
94 ½ x 68 in.

The phrase creating this design gained momentum in 2017 after Donald Trump severely restricted immigration from seven Muslim-majority nations. Popularized by Indigenous artists, it brings one’s attention to the history of settler-colonialism in the United States and how the country was established on unceded land. Today there are 574 federally recognized sovereign Indigenous nations. Miner is Métis: a person with both Indigenous and settler-colonial heritage. The colors black, white, yellow, and red reference the medicine wheel, symbolizing the four directions, four seasons, and many other natural phenomena.

No expulsión en tierras robadas, 2017
impresión digital sobre poliéster
94 ½ × 68 pulg.

Please join us for a Visiting Artist Lecture with Jacobo Alonso on Thursday, March 26 at 6 p.m. in Kimball Arts Room 143. Alonso’s multidisciplinary practice, spanning sculpture, installation, and socially engaged projects examines systems of power, migration, labor, and the human cost embedded within political language, often transforming official documents and materials into tactile, thought-provoking works.

Free and open to the public. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear directly from the artist about his process and ideas!

We Are All Migrants Artist Feature:

MARCOS RAMIREZ ERRE

Eye Charts:
Emma Goldman, 2007
Mikhail Bakunin, 2007 ("Someday the anvil, tired of being the anvil, will become the hammer.")
Federico Fellini, 2003
Digital prints on aluminum
24 x 36 in. each

Optometry charts typically assess visual acuity, but with these signs the artist presents ideological quotes, prompting readers to question their perspectives.

The individuals portrayed on these banners are just 14 of the tens of thousands of “los desaparecidos”: persons disappeared by right-wing military dictatorships in South America from the 1950s to the 1980s. The artist shares, “This series is a meditation on the violence that has historically been unleashed, in many cases as a direct result of U.S. government foreign policy and military interventions intended to disrupt and crush social and political opposition to American imperialism in Latin America.”
