The Golden Bark Foundation

The Golden Bark Foundation The Golden Bark foundation is a senior dog rescue located in Utah. Foster based and volunteer ran! We plan to rescue and find homes for these senior dogs.

GBF’S MISSION

The Golden Bark Foundation is dedicated to rescuing and advocating for at-risk senior dogs, fulfilling their immediate needs and sending them off to a love filled retirement home. We focus on rescuing senior dogs because they are often forgotten and cast aside at the point in their lives when they need the most care. When they end up in shelters, people prefer to adopt younger dogs

that require less care and maintenance with fuller lives ahead. They deserve to know love in the latter portions of their life. Every dog deserves a home to live out their golden years.

May for GBF 🤍

Here's what your donations helped cover during the month of May:
• Vet Bills: $2,617
• Dog Food: $529
• Medications & Supplements: $792
• Foster Supplies: $67
• Grooming: $30
Total: $4,037

These numbers reflect what the rescue directly spends on our dogs. Of course, it also costs money to run a rescue, and we share those expenses in our annual report each year. We pay for insurance, technology, software subscriptions, licensing fees, and so much more that doesn't always get talked about on social media.

As summer approaches, we've also seen a huge spike in owner surrender requests. We received 19 requests in May, the most we've had in a single month this year. June has only just begun, and we're already at 5+ requests.

As a smaller rescue focused solely on senior dogs, it's often harder for us to say yes than larger organizations. Vet care for seniors can be expensive, and we typically spend anywhere from $1,500–$2k per dog, sometimes much more (sometimes less too!). That's why we unfortunately have to turn so many dogs away. If we could help everyone, we would.

The work in animal welfare has been never ending for some time. I think many of us are feeling tired and most are burnt out. Owner surrender requests never seem to stop, adoptions are slower, donations are down, and the economy certainly isn't helping. I know other rescues would agree that we could all use a break haha!

But until that day comes, we'll continue doing what we can with the resources we have—and with the support of incredible communities like this one. Every share, donation, volunteer hour, adoption, and kind word helps us keep moving forward!

Thank you for supporting our mission! Every donation, no matter the size, truly makes a difference.

Grief can feel incredibly isolating, but you don't have to carry it alone.

Join us for our next Grief Support Group on Sunday, June 14th at 5:00 PM via Zoom. Whether you've recently lost a pet or are carrying grief from years ago, this is a safe space to share, listen, and connect with others. Even if you don't feel like sharing, you're still welcome to join-there is no pressure or expectations.

Pet grief often isn't taken as seriously as human grief. But throughout all of these support group sessions, we've been reminded that grief is grief. It exists. It comes and goes. It shows up again when you least expect it. Sometimes it's in a song that comes on while you're driving, the smell of a treat they loved, or a place you used to visit together.

Grief is a valid human emotion that every one of us will experience at some point. And pet grief is just as valid as any other form of grief.

There is no right way to grieve and no timeline for healing. We're simply here to support one another through it.

Our latest Substack is all about Akirra—our beautiful tripod girl. 🤍

When it comes to reactive dogs, things can be challenging. But having the right tools, support, and game plan can make all the difference.

We’re currently working with Akirra and have a solid plan in place to help her succeed—something we’re committed to continuing in her future adoptive home. We stand by our dogs, and if someone is willing to give her a chance, we’re happy to provide guidance and support every step of the way so they feel confident and prepared to welcome her into their family.

"With the right owner to provide careful consideration of her behavioral stressors, she has all the ability to thrive."

And that's exactly what we want—to see her thrive.

Take a few minutes to read more about our sweet Akirra on our Substack. It's completely free to read! You can even subscribe and have delivered straight to your inbox whenever our amazing volunteer, Madelyn, shares a new piece.

Thank you, , for sharing your talents with our rescue and helping tell the longer stories behind GBF and the dogs we love

Catch GBF at the tomorrow from 8 AM–1 PM! We’ll be in the 300 block with the farmers and growers.

We’ll have an ice pool for the pups to cool off in, plus a coloring page competition! Winners will receive a coloring book and stickers.

Stop by and say hello to our volunteers, learn more about how you can get involved, and meet Allen! He’ll be there soaking up all the love—as long as he can comfortably handle the heat.

We don’t bring dogs out on high-heat days, and when we do, we monitor them closely and make sure they head home before it becomes too much for them. Their comfort and safety always come first.

See you tomorrow! ☀️🐾

Our first adoption of June—happy retirement, Sophie! 🤍

Before coming to us, Sophie and her owner had been couch surfing for some time. Eventually, her owner left Sophie behind at one of the homes where they had been staying, and Sophie was later brought to the shelter.

At her age, Sophie is the type of dog who would typically remain in our hospice program indefinitely. But she was healthy, adaptable, and took every change in stride. We figured that if the right home came along, we’d be open to it—and thankfully, it did!

Anyone who has met Sophie has fallen in love with her, including her foster family. Adoptions often come with a mix of emotions, and this one is no exception. There’s always a bittersweet feeling when saying goodbye, but when it’s the right match, it makes letting go a little easier. Even then, a piece of your heart always goes with them.

For that reason—and so many others—we are incredibly grateful for our foster families. They give so much of their time, love, and hearts to these seniors, knowing that one day they’ll have to say goodbye.

Happy trails, Sophie🤍

Give a warm welcome to Jasper, the newest member of The Golden Bark Foundation! 🤍

We’ve already received multiple owner surrender requests in June, and while we’re still on intake hold, we’ve unfortunately had to turn many away. But Jasper’s family was able to make a donation toward his care, making sure he’d have the support he needs to find his retirement home!

Jasper is a 9-year-old Mini Schnauzer, and he’s every bit as sweet as he looks. He spent the last nine years with his mom, who loved him beyond words. In fact, a few years ago, when the family discussed moving her into a senior living facility, she refused because she didn’t want to be separated from Jasper. He was her constant companion, and from the moment you meet him, it’s clear he was deeply loved and cherished.

After his mom recently passed away, the family needed to find Jasper a new home and were referred to us by our vet. Thanks to their generous donation, Jasper’s upcoming vet appt and dental will be covered!

Despite all the changes he’s experienced in such a short time, Jasper has been settling in wonderfully at his foster home. He’s proven to be a resilient little guy who adjusts surprisingly well and is soaking up all the love being offered.

As his foster put it: “Stop sending me such sweet dogs!” 😂 And honestly, she’s not wrong—we’re all smitten with this guy!

In honor of his mom, Luanne, we’ll do everything we can to make sure Jasper’s future family loves him just as much as she did.

Welcome to GBF, Jasper🤍

This past Friday, beloved alum, Hazel, found peace after experiencing some unexpected health complications & crossed the bridge.

Hazel (Winnie) was adopted in Nov 2023. Hazel had been surrendered because the family didn’t want to pay for her grooming & brought her to the shelter to be euthanized. Even before that, she had suffered neglect in a previous home. Her leg was broken by a child, leaving her fearful of children,& the family chose not to pursue vet care. Because the injury never healed properly, Hazel spent the rest of her life getting around on 3 legs.

Despite everything she endured, Hazel never stopped loving. Her story touched her family, who quickly fell in love with her. She became the light of their world. They would share she was bursting with personality & brought joy to everyone she met. She also became inseparable from her sister, Daisy. Every update we received from her family was filled with happiness, adventure & love.

Hazel was one of those dogs we continued talking about long after. Just that Friday, after saying goodbye to Chips, we found ourselves looking at photos of Hazel & reminiscing about how much we all adored her. Especially board member, Nate, who was quite fond of her & would have adopted her had she not found the perfect home—which she absolutely did.

Though Hazel experienced the failures of humans more than once & found herself in the shelter multiple times, she ultimately found exactly what she deserved: peace & unconditional love.

Together with her family, they shared countless adventures. She went skiing, explored trails, jumped through the snow, got the zoomies, & loved a good game of tug-of-war. She even had the cutest bark that always made her family smile.

As her family shared:
“To know her was to love her.”
“To have been a part of her life was a gift.”

Thank you to the Howard family for opening your hearts & home to a dog as special as Hazel.

Hazel was lucky to spend her final years surrounded by the love she always deserved. Please keep her family in your thoughts.

Rest easy, Hazel. It was one of the greatest honors to love you & be a small part of your story 🤍
