🥌 CURLING 101: Why Do Stones Curl?

If you’ve ever watched curling, you’ve probably asked yourself:

“Why don’t the stones just go straight?”

The answer is a fascinating combination of physics, precision, and a little bit of mystery.

When a curler releases a stone, they give it a gentle rotation called the handle. As the stone glides across specially prepared pebbled ice, that rotation interacts with the textured surface, causing the stone to gradually curve, or curl, toward the end of its path.

Even more interesting? Scientists have studied curling for decades, and while they understand much of what’s happening, they’re still researching exactly why the stone curls the way it does. It’s one of the many things that makes curling such a unique sport!

🥌 CURLING 101: Sweeping

One of the biggest misconceptions about curling is that players sweep to clean the ice.

In reality, sweeping is one of the most important parts of the game.

By sweeping in front of a moving stone, players can help it travel farther and influence how much it curls. That’s why you’ll hear teammates constantly communicating and calling for more—or less—sweeping throughout a shot.

A well-timed sweep can be the difference between a perfect draw to the Button and a stone that comes up short.

So the next time you see curlers furiously brushing the ice, remember: they’re not cleaning. They’re helping shape the shot.

🥌 CURLING 101: How Scoring Works

One of the most common questions we hear is: “How do you keep score in curling?”

The answer is easier than you might think!

At the end of each end, only one team scores. The team with the stone closest to the Button earns a point, plus one additional point for every stone that is closer to the Button than the opponent’s nearest stone.

That’s it!

While the rules are simple, the strategy behind scoring can get incredibly complex. Teams are constantly deciding whether to draw into the House, guard their stones, or try to remove their opponent’s stones from play.

🥌 CURLING 101: The House

Those colorful circles at the end of the sheet aren’t just there to look pretty—they’re the target area known as the House.

At the center is the Button, the ultimate goal for many shots. The surrounding rings (the 4-foot, 8-foot, and 12-foot) help players judge distance, plan strategy, and communicate with teammates.

Scoring is based on which team’s stones finish closest to the Button after all stones have been thrown. The closer you are, the better your chances of putting points on the board.

Now that you know the basics, you’ll be able to follow a curling match like a pro—or at least know why everyone gets excited when a stone lands on the Button. 😉

As we are currently in our off-season, let’s explore some basics and more about one of our favorite sports.

🥌 CURLING 101: The Stone

The curling stone might look simple, but it’s one of the most unique pieces of sporting equipment in the world.

Each stone weighs up to 42 pounds and is made from exceptionally durable granite. Most high-level curling stones are crafted using granite from Ailsa Craig, a small island off the coast of Scotland that has supplied stone for the sport for more than a century.

Why that granite? It’s incredibly dense, resists absorbing water, and can withstand thousands of collisions on the ice while maintaining a smooth, consistent running surface.

A curling stone may take a beating during a game, but with proper care and maintenance, it can remain in use for decades.

Next time you watch a match, remember: every shot starts with 42 pounds of Scottish granite gliding across the ice.
