June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month

Sadly, so many seniors in our community and beyond face silent battles every single day. It’s time to bring these hidden challenges into the light and stand up for the vulnerable older adults in our communities.

Here are 3 alarming facts you might not know:

👉Approximately 10% of older adults in the U.S. experience some form of abuse or neglect.

👉In nearly 60% of elder abuse incidents, the perpetrator is actually a family member.

👉Financial exploitation is one of the most common forms of abuse, alongside physical, emotional, and systemic neglect.

How YOU can spread awareness and take action this month:

💜Wear Purple on June 15th: June 15th is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). Wear purple to show your solidarity and spark conversations.
💜Learn the Signs: Watch for sudden changes in bank accounts, unexplained bruises, or uncharacteristic social withdrawal in the seniors in your life.
💜Share This Post: Education is the first step toward prevention. Use your platform to remind others that our seniors deserve safety and dignity.

📚✨ CCWTX Summer Book Club: June Selections! ✨📚

We are so excited to kick off our Summer Book Club with our official June picks! These books beautifully tie into the mission of Crisis Center of West Texas in age-appropriate ways.

Here are this month's featured titles:

👩 Adult Selection
"Know My Name" by Chanel Miller
A beautifully written, powerful memoir that reclaims the author's narrative after a high-profile sexual assault case, exposing the structural biases of the legal system while celebrating the resilience of the human spirit.

🧑 Teen Selection
"Wait, What?" by Heather Corinna & Isabella Rotman
A friendly, inclusive, and comic-illustrated guide that answers real questions about puberty, bodies, relationships, and digital safety with total honesty and zero judgment.

🧒 Kid Selections
Age 3–7: "Don't Hug Doug" by Carrie Finison
A fun and lighthearted picture book that teaches young children about body autonomy, respect, and the simple power of asking for permission before giving a hug.

Age 6–10: "I Said No!" by Zack & Kimberly King
A gentle yet empowering story designed to help elementary-aged kids understand personal boundaries, identify safe adults, and confidently use their "No" voice.

💡 How the Club Works:
Remember, there’s no need to clear your busy summer calendar for meetings!

📖 Read at your own pace throughout the month.

💬 Comment your thoughts right here on our social media posts whenever you finish.

🏡 Take it home to use as a tech-free, meaningful discussion opportunity with your family.

⚠️ Reminder: While these selections are carefully chosen to be age-appropriate, please use your own discretion when deciding to read or sharing them with your children.

Happy reading! Which one are you picking up first? 👇
