💊 Barbiturates are powerful central nervous system depressants that were once commonly prescribed for sleep 😴, anxiety, and seizure disorders. While some still have limited medical use today, they carry a high risk for dependence, overdose, and death when misused. ⚠️

Because tolerance develops quickly, people may take larger doses to feel the same effects — making overdose especially dangerous. 🚨 Mixing barbiturates with alcohol 🍺 or other depressants can slow breathing and heart rate even further, increasing the risk of coma or fatal overdose.

🧠 Knowing the signs, risks, and street names of substances like barbiturates helps build awareness, encourage prevention, and protect our communities. 🤝

Thank you to all of the partners and sectors represented at today's Regional Alignment/Epidemiological Work Group Meeting.

The challenges facing our communities do not belong to any one organization or sector, and neither do the solutions. Stronger outcomes for youth, families, and communities are built through collaboration, shared knowledge, and coordinated action.

I am encouraged by the commitment around the table and grateful for the growing momentum behind this work. Looking forward to continuing these partnerships as we strengthen regional alignment across West Texas.

Today’s combined Regional Alignment and Epidemiological Work Group Meeting was a powerful reminder that no single organization can address complex community challenges alone.

Thank you to our partners from Crisis Center of West Texas, Maximus, Special Olympics Texas, Permia Care, Voice of Hope, High Sky Children’s Ranch, Deflourish Home, Impact Youth, Ector County Juvenile Probation Department, Permian Basin Behavioral Health Hospital, and The Peace Academy for joining the conversation and sharing your expertise.

Regional alignment and epidemiological work are most effective when diverse sectors come together to identify trends, strengthen partnerships, and coordinate solutions that improve outcomes for our communities.

As we prepare for Bridge the Basin, we invite leaders from all sectors to join the conversation. The challenges facing our communities do not exist in isolation. Mental health, substance use, education, public safety, workforce development, healthcare, housing, and family stability are deeply interconnected. When one system is impacted, the effects are often felt across many others. Meaningful change happens when we recognize those intersections and work together to create solutions that are informed, coordinated, and community-driven.
