As you celebrate this Fourth of July and the freedoms we’ve been blessed to enjoy through the sacrifices of our armed forces and the brave men and women who have served our nation, I challenge you to put service before self.
As you relax on the beach, gather with family and friends, or enjoy your barbecues and favorite beverages, take a moment to think about a fellow American who may be less fortunate. Imagine what a simple act of kindness could mean to someone who is struggling.
Maybe it’s sharing a hamburger and a bottle of water with someone experiencing homelessness. Maybe it’s offering a listening ear to someone who simply needs to be heard. Small acts of compassion can make a lasting difference.
It should not be about the interest building up in your bank account, but about the interest of helping others. That is the kind of legacy you will be remembered for, not one lost in the ashes of the materialistic world.
Putting others before ourselves is more than a good deed, it’s a reflection of the values that have always made America strong: compassion, unity, equality, and respect for the dignity of every person, regardless of race, background, nationality, circumstance, ability, or disability. The able and disabled are equally the same and should be treated the same. We hold these values and truth across all borders. One people, one humanity. Our diversity is one of our greatest strengths, and when we care for one another, we honor the very ideals of liberty and justice for all.
This Independence Day, let’s celebrate not only our freedom, but also our shared responsibility to lift one another up and ensure that every person has the opportunity to thrive.
