Today, I write to you to address a matter of utmost urgency and deep concern: the tragic loss of over 300 lives last year as a result of overcrowding in our correctional facilities. It is with a heavy heart that I discuss the consequences of the habitual felony act and the ineffectiveness of our parole board, and corruption of the ADOC which have exacerbated an already dire situation.
I implore you to reflect upon the gravity of these lives lost and the immense suffering endured by their loved ones. Every mother, wife, and daughter affected by these tragedies deserves more than just an explanation; they deserve action and justice.
As representatives of the people, it is your duty to work towards the betterment of our society and the well-being of its individuals. It is disheartening to witness the cycle of incarceration that so often leaves individuals trapped in a revolving door of punishment, violence , corruption without adequate opportunities for rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
The habitual felony act, while potentially well-intentioned in its inception, has had unintended consequences. Its implementation has resulted in overcrowding that strains our correctional facilities beyond capacity. This overcrowding has proven to be a breeding ground for further problems, including increased violence, corruption and a lack of access to education or skill-building opportunities, and limited access to mental health resources.
Moreover, I draw your attention to the failures within our parole board system and it's 8% grant rate is preposterous .The parole board plays a pivotal role in evaluating the readiness of individuals for reintegration into society. However, its inefficiency and limited focus on rehabilitation have only contributed to the overcrowding issue and denied many deserving candidates the chance to redeem themselves. It must be forced to go by its very own guidelines.
It is time for each member of this legislature to take personal responsibility for the lives affected by these shortcomings. I urge you to truly understand the ramifications of your decisions and, with empathy, put yourselves in the shoes of those mothers, wives, and daughters who have lost their loved ones. Imagine the pain and frustration they endure as they seek answers and justice.
We must prioritize rehabilitation and ensure that individuals have access to the resources necessary for successful reintegration. By investing in programs that address the root causes of criminal behavior and providing meaningful opportunities for education, skill-building, and mental health support, we can reduce recidivism rates and create safer communities.
Beyond this, we must also remove the habitual felony act. While accountability is necessary, it should not perpetuate a cycle of punishment that prevents individuals from rebuilding their lives. Let us explore alternatives that encourage rehabilitation, such as diversion programs, community service, and restorative justice practices.
In conclusion, I implore each of you to recognize your responsibility and actively pursue meaningful change. Remove the barriers that prevent the rehabilitation of individuals and examine alternatives to the habitual felony act. Stand alongside these mothers, wives, and daughters, and work towards a future where justice is not only served but also tempered with compassion.
Let us work together to ensure that no more lives are lost due to overcrowding, ineffective policies, and a lack of rehabilitation opportunities. The people of Alabama deserve better, and it is in your power to make a difference.

Thank you.

Members of the Prison Oversight Committee,

I am writing this letter to express my anger and disappointment regarding the rampant corruption, violence, r**es, and murders that continue to plague the Alabama Department of Corrections.
As a concerned citizen, I hold you, the Prison Oversight Committee, directly responsible for addressing and rectifying these appalling issues.
It is with great sorrow that I have witnessed the deteriorating conditions within our state prisons, where human rights are routinely violated, and systematic abuse flourishes. The very purpose of your committee is to ensure the safety and rehabilitation of inmates, yet you have failed miserably in your duty. I ask that you reflect on the moral fiber of this committee and take the necessary actions to restore justice and dignity within our correctional system.
The corruption inside the Alabama Department of Corrections is disgraceful and criminal .The testimonies of former staff members, inmates, and even whistleblowers paint a disturbing picture of unchecked power, bribery, and favoritism amongst the staff. It is your responsibility to question and challenge these practices, holding those involved accountable for their actions. I demand that you thoroughly investigate allegations of corruption and take swift and appropriate action against any implicated individuals.
Violence within our prison system has become alarmingly commonplace. The lack of adequate security measures, understaffing, and the proliferation of gangs have turned correctional facilities into breeding grounds for brutality. Inmates are subjected to constant fear, resulting in physical and psychological harm. You, as the oversight committee, must assert your authority and demand immediate reforms to improve the safety of these institutions. It is essential to implement meaningful security measures, provide proper training for the staff, and establish protocols to prevent and respond to violent incidents effectively.
The overwhelming cases of r**e occurring within our prisons are absolutely horrifying and should never be tolerated in any civilized society. Sexual assault is an abhorrent crime, and it is an absolute failure on your part to protect vulnerable individuals from these heinous acts. The victims deserve justice, and it is your obligation to ensure that proper investigations are conducted, perpetrators are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and measures are put in place to prevent such atrocities from happening again. Ignoring this issue makes you complicit in the suffering of these inmates.
Perhaps the most distressing aspect is the number of preventable deaths occurring inside Alabama's correctional facilities. The failure to provide adequate medical care and mental health services to the incarcerated is a grave violation of their fundamental rights. Each life lost due to your negligence is on your hands. You must prioritize the provision of quality healthcare, consistent monitoring of prisoner well-being, and the implementation of programs focused on mental health treatment and rehabilitation.
I demand that you fulfill your duty to the people of Alabama by taking immediate action against the corruption, violence, r**es, and murders occurring inside the Alabama Department of Corrections. It is imperative that you demonstrate the moral integrity required of you to restore faith in our justice system. The inmates entrusted to your care deserve safety, dignity, and opportunities for rehabilitation.
Failure to address the issues will leave no doubt in the minds of the citizens of Alabama that you are complicit in the perpetuation of this cycle of abuse. I demand you to act swiftly, decisively, and without prejudice to safeguard the well-being and rights of our incarcerated population.

Yours sincerely,

Tax payers of Alabama.
For far too long, I have observed your complacency with the rampant corruption and drug smuggling within the Alabama Department of Corrections. Your lack of action and your failure to hold your elected officials accountable have paved the way for countless deaths, and it is time for you to shoulder the responsibility.
It is no secret that corruption runs deep within the walls of the Alabama Department of Corrections. From the abuse of power to the illicit activities that take place behind closed doors, these corridors are breeding grounds for injustice, immorality, and suffering. Yet, where is your outrage? Why do you remain silent?
The fact that legislation is allowing the parole board and the department itself to continue operating under these conditions and to allow the habitual felony offender act to remain is not just a slap in the face to justice, but a direct disregard for the lives lost under their watch. By allowing this act of barbarity to persist, you, the taxpayers of Alabama, are directly responsible for every single death that has occurred within the Alabama Department of Corrections.
Your complacency has enabled the continued reign of terror within these prison walls. The lives of countless inmates have been lost, families shattered, and futures destroyed, all because you have chosen to turn a blind eye. By failing to demand change and accountability, you have become complicit in this heinous state of affairs.
Have you forgotten that these inmates are human beings too? They may have made mistakes, committed crimes, but they deserve to be treated with dignity, respect, and given a chance at reform. Instead, they are subjected to a system that thrives on corruption and neglect. And who is to blame for perpetuating this broken system? It is none other than you, the taxpayers of Alabama.
Your inaction speaks volumes about your values and priorities. While you may feel safe and secure in your homes, these prisons are plagued with violence, drug smuggling, and a complete lack of regard for human life. And yet, you continue to contribute your hard-earned money, year after year, to fund a system that perpetuates this cycle of suffering.
The time for change is long overdue. It is time for you, the taxpayers of Alabama, to rise from your slumber of complacency and demand justice. You must hold your elected officials accountable for the corruption and negligence that runs rampant within the Alabama Department of Corrections. Only through your collective voices can we bring the necessary reforms to save lives, restore dignity, and ensure justice prevails.
Your taxes should fund a system that promotes rehabilitation, safety, and the betterment of society, not one that perpetuates corruption and condemns individuals to a life of despair. It is your duty as responsible citizens to demand transparency, accountability, and systemic change within the Alabama Department of Corrections.
Remember, your silence is an endorsement of the status quo. Your complacency makes you complicit. Every death that occurs within the Alabama Department of Corrections should lay heavy on your conscience. It is time to stand up, to demand change, to fight for justice, and to hold those accountable who have failed us.
The power lies in your hands, Alabama. Will you continue to be complacent, allowing the corruption and deaths to continue, or will you rise up, demand change, and work towards a better, more just Alabama Department of Corrections? The choice is yours, and history will remember how you chose to act.
