We are making this post, due to a recent posting on Facebook that our animals are being neglected. We have already been contacted by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, and they have done an inspection of the site to ensure that all the animal residents are being properly cared for. We have received word back from them that they have found no instances of neglect. However, we want to be sure that there are no misunderstandings or false narratives.
To be clear, we are not neglecting our animals. They are under the care of a licensed veterinarian, are checked on multiple times a day, and receive fresh water and high-quality food, daily.
With this hot weather, our wonderful zoo crew has been on top of ensuring access to fresh water and using fans, to keep the critters cool, as needed. Alongside a water trough, we have also made sure the pigs have a mud area; this helps them to keep cool during hot weather as they lack the ability to sweat effectively. Every pen has a water bucket or tank, that is filled daily - some are inside the houses and not visible. We understand that we have some tanks that have seen better days cosmetically - this is likely the last summer of use for them. To get fans to every pen, we have had to use some extension cords as electric is centralized there.
Many of our animals are older - it can be tough to keep weight on them. Some of our animals are easy keepers - it can be tough to get weight off of them. A few of our animals came to us with pre-existing conditions - that our vet treats them for. However, no matter their story, each and every one of these animals is loved by our team, both at the zoo and in the store. We would never neglect or withhold care from them.
The Concord Zoo is a place for people, who may not otherwise have the chance, to connect with farm creatures. If you are ever visiting and have a concern, please call the store or mention it to a team member while on-site so that it can be handled right away.
We appreciate all those who visit and love our animal residents and hopes this eases any fears that they are not being cared for.
