This photograph shows two members of the Women’s Club of Ocoee, Washie Hudson and Lillian Bennet, enjoying a beautiful day outside of the venerable clubhouse building. The club originated in 1924, when 36 women organized a club so that the Women of Ocoee could focus their efforts on common goals. Originally, the club members met in each other’s homes. However, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) partially funded the construction of a clubhouse building. The doors opened on February 7, 1938 and the Club managed to pay off the mortgage in only six years.

The eye-catching Art Deco architectural style is typical of many WPA buildings of that era. Visitors to Ocoee today will see that the facade has changed little since its inception nearly 90 years ago. Though, it is not only the structure which has survived, the Women’s Club of Ocoee still regularly meets there to this day.
