🤙 Surfing History In Motion — Now On Exhibit At The California Surf Museum! 🌊
What an incredible moment at the 41st Annual Oceanside Longboard Surfing Club Contest & Beach Festival!
On August 8, surfing history came alive at the Oceanside Pier as modern-day surfers took to the waves aboard replicas of the legendary 17-foot Hawaiian royal surfboards. World champions, legendary surfers, and accomplished watermen and women helped recreate a remarkable piece of California surf history. 🤙
A Very Special Thank You To Bob Pearson Of Arrow Surfboards, Who Joined In The Day Of Fun! This Event Would Not Have Happened Without His Help.
The surfboards and images featured in this exhibit are exact replicas of the boards the Hawaiian princes rode in foreign waves across three continents. These rare wooden beauties were painstakingly recreated by Santa Cruz master surfboard shaper Bob Pearson, bringing a living piece of surfing history back to life.
After many visits to the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, Pearson meticulously measured and recreated exact replicas of these magnificent waveriding boards
— the same replicas you can now see on display at the California Surf Museum.
The Story Behind The Boards
In 1885, three Hawaiian princes came to California to attend school. While living near Santa Cruz, they crafted massive 17-foot surfboards from California redwood, continuing the surfing traditions they had learned in Hawaii.
More than 140 years later, their incredible story lives on at the California Surf Museum as part of:
