Appearance It is common for the Chiweenie to have the long body and build of a Dachshund.

They may have long floppy ears like the Dachshund or perky ears of the Chihuahua. Life Expectancy The life expectancy of the Chiweenie is around 15 years of age. Size A fully grown Chiweenie can weigh between 5 to 10 pounds and stands around 8 inches tall. Personality The Chiweenie is very sweet dog who wants nothing more than to be with her family. They are terrific lap dogs once they grow out of

the puppy stage. They need lots of attention while they are growing. Be prepared to spend lots of time playing tug of war. Temperament The Chiweenie is a very easy going happy dog that can be classified as a 'Social Butterfly'. Family Dog The Chiweenie makes a wonderful family dogs. If raised with them and properly socialized they love children otherwise they may be shy or fearful of them. Companionship The Chiweenie is a very loving, affectionate, protective dog who is very in tune with your feelings. They love to show their affection by licking you and love to sleep under the covers with you. They can be a very needy dog who loves to cuddle. Head The head of the Chiweenie is very small in size. Nose The nose of the Chiweenie may be black or brown in color. Eyes The Chiweenie has large green, brown or black eyes. Ears The Chiweenie can have large, long, floppy or perky, upright ears. They are typically floppy when the dog is relaxed and perky when they are excited or alert. Muzzle The Chiweenie has a medium to long muzzle. Teeth/Bite It is not uncommon for the Chiweenie to have lower incisors that are slightly crooked, but typically the teeth have no abnormalities. Neck The Chiweenie can have a very broad neck. Body The Chiweenie can have a long, slender body much like that of the Dachshund. The body has a tight and toned appearance. They are typically not very tall and have a stalky build. Forequarters The muscular forequarters of the Chiweenie can be longer in proportion to the body like the Chihuahua's or shorter like the Dachshund's. Hindquarters The hindquarters of the Chiweenie are long, strong and muscular. Gait The Chiweenie has a smooth, quick gait. Feet The Chiweenie has very small, delicate feet. Tail The Chiweenie has a long tail. They can be said to have a "wiggle butt" because when they wag their tails, their whole body wags. Color The coat of the Chiweenie can come in many colors including black, strawberry blond, chocolate, brown or black with tan markings. Coat The Chiweenie can have a short or medium length glossy, silky coat. Shedding The Chiweenie is a low shedding dog. Grooming The Chiweenie requires very little grooming as compared to other breeds. They just needs an occasional brushing. Training The Chiweenie is very intelligent, yet needs consistent training. Behavior The Chiweenie is a very sweet, gentle, intelligent, affectionate, protective dog with a high energy level. They are very well behaved but may bond more with one owner like the Chihuahua and tend to listen to that person better than the rest of the family. Barking Some Chiweenies bark very little while others bark excessively when the hear somebody outside, when visitors arrive or when they feel threatened. Feeding The Chiweenie requires very little food and is able to self-regulate their eating habits. It has been reported that some tend to be picky eaters and get sick of their food after a while and need have it changed while others will eat just about anything. They may be fed dry or canned food twice a day. Weather Some Chiweenies have no fears when it comes to weather and don't mind going out in rain; while others hate the cold or rain and refuse to go outside in these conditions. Allergies The Chiweenie may be allergic to pollen causing their eyes to water excessively after spending a long time outdoors. Exercise The Chiweenie is an extremely energetic dog that requires lots of daily exercise. The love to run and should be walked daily and let out to play in a fenced area at least twice a day. Physical Ability The Chiweenie is a very fast dog who can run circles around other dogs. Living Conditions The Chiweenie is a great indoor lap dog. They are small in stature and unable to defend themselves against offenders so a fenced yard is recommend for outdoor play. Health The Chiweenie is an overall healthy dog. Skin Health The Chiweenie typically has very good skin health. Eye Health The Chiweenie may have watery eyes due to dust and pollen. Ear Health The Chiweenie can be affected by minor debris build-up in their ears that require minimal but frequent cleaning to avoid infection. Bone Health The Chiweenie may be prone to knee problems especially with the tissue that is suppossed to support the knee causing the cartilage around the knee to separate and sit to the side. It may require surgery which can be quite expensive. Be sure to have your pup checked for this as soon as possible to avoid leg issues later in life. Litter Size The Chiweenie may have litters of 2 to 6 pups, however the mother and pups are at risk of not surviving due to their size.

Because of the vas number of Chihuahas and Chiweenies currently looking for loving homes we simply cant take them all in, so we are posting some currently for adoption at the Devore Animal Shelter in San Bernardino County in hopes that they can find a forever, loving home. You have to remember that Devore is an extermly high kill shelter and sadly the dogs are not allowed to stay there more then a week before being put down. If you see one you would like to adopt or even foster please let the shelter and So Cal Chiweenie Rescue know as soon as you can! The adoption fee is as follows at the Devore Animal Shelter: $85 for puppies under 16 weeks (4 months) and $95 for dogs over 16 weeks (4 months) the adoption fee covers the following: Vaccinations, Spay/Neuter Fee, Licenses (only for San Bernardino County residents)
