El Camino Real FNE Group, California

El Camino Real FNE Group, California The Spanish name "El Camino Real" translates to either "The King's Highway" or "The Royal Road." The name thus became synonymous with the Kingship of Our Lord.

The Federation of North-American Explorers (FNE) is proud to announce the formation of the El Camino Real FNE Group in Oceanside (northern San Diego County), California! This historic road runs from San Diego to San Francisco and connects all 21 Missions in California founded by Blessed Junipero Serra and his successors between the years 1769 and 1823. Originally named so by Spanish soldiers in ho

nor of their king, Father Serra continued California settlements by building the Missions and furthering the road. The Missions are the crux and most beautiful part of California history, and many are still working parishes today. Several, however, have fallen to various states of decay and ruin. Mission history includes their secularization and takeover by Mormon settlers and the U.S. Army, until 1865 when President Lincoln returned the Missions to the Church. We are fortunate in our area to have some of the most important Missions built: Mission San Diego de Alcalá, the first Mission built; Mission San Luis Rey, the "King of the Missions" here in Oceanside; and Mission San Juan Capistrano (just up the highway from us), the first Mission returned to the Church by President Lincoln, three weeks before his assassination (and the home of the famous returning swallows of Capistrano yearly on the feast of Saint Joseph). The study of Mission history is still required in 4th grade public schools, as well as Catholic schools. Burgundy and Gray:
Our colors are burgundy and gray. The burgundy symbolizes Our Lord's royalty and the blood spilt by the martyred priests and the many Indians while building and defending our California Missions. The gray represents the churches, towns, and streets along the way.

During our annual FNE retreat this past weekend we were lucky enough to have an obstacle course set up for us thanks to the kindness of one of our parishioners who serves in the United States Marine Corps (Semper Fi). Enjoy this view of our boys going through the paces!

Our Otters, Timber Wolves, Explorers, leaders, and dads spent the weekend together at our 4th annual retreat at our Church, Saint Margaret of Scotland. We were joined by our Pastor and Chaplain for the entire weekend. We were blessed with Eucharistic Adoration, Benediction, morning Mass, Confessions, Stations of the Cross, and the Rosary. We also had a few Promise ceremonies, great games and challenges, spiritual talks, movies, great food, and fabulous company. Thanks to Rose Kelley, sister of 4 of our members, for the photos of boys and their dads.

Our Timber Wolves and Explorers made a trip to Joshua Tree National Park for a weekend of camping and rock climbing. We were blessed with good weather and with the help of Glen (the uncle of 2 of our boys), who trained and guided us on our ascent of the rock faces.

Eight of our Explorers made a trip to the Colorado River for a 35 mile paddle over 3 days. The weather was speactacular, the sights were awesome, and the opportunity to bond with our brothers was HUGE! Each evening included praying the Rosary and sharing stories around the campfire.
