Friday at 8am Hawaii - join ELP and the Language Documentation Training Center for the fourth session of the 2025 Language Documentation Learning Series!

This week, Cole Flottman from the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa will be leading a session on how you can start documenting your language's phonology (sounds) and thinking about how that relates to orthography (writing systems) - don't worry, that may sound like some intimidating academic jargon, but we'll start from the beginning!

This will be a fun, simple introduction to how you can look deeper into the sounds of your language, how writing systems are built, and how you can use this knowledge to support your documentation work. You don't need any previous experience in linguistics.

Register at: http://bit.ly/langdoc2025 If you’ve already registered, you can use the same Zoom link as last week.

See you there!

The 1776 Declaration of Independence that led to the formation of the United States listed ‘unalienable Rights’ that included ‘Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness’. However, the same document demonised Indigenous peoples, calling them ‘merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions’. The new U.S. government, despite calling for freedom of religion and speech in its Constitution, set about undermining Indigenous lives, liberty, and happiness by expropriating their lands and forcing them westward.
