“Just show up.”
Over five and a half years ago, our friend Michael read those words in a Union-Tribune article. So that’s what he did. And five and a half years later, he’s still showing up.
Every single week, Michael brings water. We’ve talked about how essential it is when you’re living on the streets, through the hot days and the cold ones. But a bottle of water is also an opportunity to connect, to share a smile, learn someone’s name, and have a conversation. It’s a simple way to let someone know they’re worth your time. To see them, hear them, and get to know them.
That’s the simplicity of what we do at Humanity Showers. It’s never been just about showers. It’s not about raising money or being a big organization or a small one. It’s about doing what you can with what you have, and doing it consistently—with love, intention, and dignity.
Michael reminds us that caring for people doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes it starts with a bottle of water and a willingness to keep showing up.
