We had a really special visit with my friend and neighbor, Neil, the longtime, devoted caregiver to two beloved neighborhood cats: Walter and Franz.
Walter, the long-haired tabby with the crooked smile, has quite a story. When I brought him in for neuter years ago, I learned that he had severe stomatitis and ultimately had all of his teeth removed, which is why his smile is so unique. He’s also missing one ear after many hard years surviving and fighting on the streets. Despite it all, he is gentle, stoic, and deeply loved and has chosen Neil a dozen times over as his forever caregiver.
Franz, the very special black-and-white cat, was fed by me for a long time before I finally had him neutered last year. He’s a very sensitive and shy cat who has never fully lost his street instincts though I would never consider him feral. After his release, he disappeared, but a few days later, he showed up at Neil’s house… and he’s never left.
The other night, during a particularly cold night, Franz slept inside for the first time. He still prefers his driveway throne, where he collects treats and enjoys two square meals a day and as you can see, he hasn’t missed many. Franz has grown into a very sturdy, well-loved boy and lets Neil (only) pet him.
Neil has lived in this neighborhood for over 30 years. He’s seen Oceanside change in every possible way and through it all, he’s remained constant. He shared with me yesterday that many years ago he was feeding up to 16 cats at a time in his driveway.
Long before Cats of Oceanside existed, Neil was already doing the work. Neil was the original Cats of Oceanside. Quietly showing up and caring for the city’s most overlooked (and sweetest) residents. I am so proud to call him my friend.
