Disc Golf Update:
As many of you are aware, our scheduled opening date for the Disc Golf course at Kahuku Park Ocean View was June 7th.
Unfortunately, we are unable to open until we get the go ahead from the County.
Our non profit has followed all County guidance during the building of the disc golf course.
There was an ADA complaint filed with the county by an individual and even though that complaint has since been rescinded, the County is still required to go through the proper channels to address it.
We are not sure when we will be able to open it, but will provide updates as we receive them. We appreciate your patience and all of our volunteers’ hard work in building this course.
It was our hope that the course would be open in time for our community to enjoy it during the summer, and we sincerely hope that it will be able to open soon.
In the meantime, we are still looking for a few more mulch deliveries to further improve the walking paths in the course. Please message if you are interested in helping out! If you have questions, feel free to message as well.

We would like to introduce our board to the community. All slots are full, but we welcome anyone who would like to get involved in the future skatepark project to volunteer time along with us as we continue working towards the larger skatepark.

Laura Roberts has lived in Ocean View for 11 years with her husband and 4 keiki and strives to make it a better place by providing more programs and amenities. She pours her time into the skatepark project every day and is really happy about the DIY skatepark bringing more recreation to our community. She runs an electives program for over 50 homeschool students and her own business.

Kaimi Kaupiko was born and raised in Miloli’i where he runs own non-profit, Kalanihale. Kalanihale was Ocean View Skatepark’s fiscal sponsor until we got our own non-profit up and running. He is a strong community advocate with over 14 years of experience getting projects off the ground, fundraising, grantwriting, education, cultural exchanges, and community outreach.

Ikaika Pestana was born and raised on Oahu. He lives in Ocean View with his wife and 5 keiki. He has professionally managed community association non-profits for over 7 years. He teaches dance and martial arts in the community and enjoys taking his family to the DIY skatepark.

Tia Delao has lived in Ocean View for 26 years with her family. She has drafted up a beautiful 3D island themed design idea for the proposed larger skatepark. Photo attached.

In light of the responses to our previous post, it has been removed.
Providing details to the decision was not to put anyone down, but to explain why a difficult decision was made.
The board stands by its decision.
We again thank Travis for his advocacy in Ka’u, and wish him the best moving forward.
This decision was not personal, and we are still on speaking terms with him, as well as continue our personal friendships. We have made amends.

In regards to how the park was built, the people who volunteered their time at the workdays and the County Parks and Rec. Dept. know who built it and that is what matters.
Travis was a very important part of advocacy for years in Ocean View and he still maintains his original vision of a bigger, ADA skatepark. He will continue to advocate for adaptive sports.
We are still happy to involve him in functions and various aspects of building this park.

Our board consists of individuals whose priority is bringing more healthy outdoor recreational opportunities to Ocean View, therefore building resilience and community.
We are continuing in our plan of building a bigger skatepark in the future, and adding other recreational amenities when possible. If you would like to be involved and are serious about donating your time for the cause, please contact us.

Finishing off our bios of people who were integral in the DIY skatepark. This is a long one- a family post. -Also a little weird to write about myself (Laura) in third person.

Laura Roberts, originally from Kalispell, MT has been living in Ocean View for the last decade and engaging in areas ranging from creating homeschool programs to volunteering her time for the disc golf course and Ocean View Skatepark. She helped advocate for a skatepark in her hometown over 25 years ago back in her skater days, and spearheaded the DIY Skatepark project in Ocean View, coordinating the build, fundraising, materials procurement, county contact, grant writing, rock picking, providing meals, posts on Facebook, and all other aspects of running the non profit.
The process to build the originally planned skatepark was so long, and felt defeating at times, so she pitched the idea of a DIY skatepark to the county in October of 2024, saying this could serve as an immediate space that could be used by skaters of all ages and levels and then transition to the keiki skate space when the bigger park is eventually built.
She also planned and organized the Grand opening party for the skatepark and plans to do future events for the community.
She is a fiber artist by trade, has 4 kids, all of which are homeschooled (one graduated), runs a homeschool electives program for over 50 students, and volunteers around the community wherever she sees a need.
She is solar powered and enjoys beach time, swing dancing, hiking with her family, and playing music.

Izzy Roberts, 15, has been working at the skatepark as many days as he is able on top of his college and high school classes. He has put over 120 hours in just the last few months. Homeschooling has allowed him to work long days at the park and then do school on evenings and weekends. He is always helping manage the booth at fundraisers as well. He enjoys skating, fishing, surfing, leatherworking, and woodworking. He’s super stoked to finally have a skatepark close by after 9 long years of waiting. (photo courtesy of Paul Dagdag)

Micah Roberts, 13, has helped in many various aspects of the park build. He picked many many rocks, helped make lunches and dinners for the crew, fundraising, soliciting donations, and provides lots of support and help with a happy heart where needed. He enjoys playing video games, the drums, piano, and the ocarina. Now, he is picking up a new hobby of skating!

Fierra Roberts, 16, is the artistic one! She designed both the disc golf and the new “Kahuku Grind” logos. She also provides a lot of support such as picking up supplies from Kona and Hilo, helping make food for the crew, and other various tasks. She is attending Hilo Community College and will be graduating next year from High School and college with an Associates in Arts. She enjoys all things art, hanging with her cat Nikko, and listening to music.

Adam Roberts, Laura’s husband, is the one behind the scenes. He dyes the shirts for our fundraisers, works on the computer, and supports in every way possible. He enjoys reading, dice games, beach days, hiking, and building things.

Asa Roberts, 22, now lives on his own property and works full time in Kona. He was very involved in volunteering years ago with the skatepark project. He has been busy working off island the last few years, but still finds ways to help out here and there now that he is back. He enjoys hiking, gaming, and beach time.

The Unwritten Rules of the Concrete: How to Share the Skatepark Without Losing Your Line
From right-of-way to spectator safety, here’s how to navigate our local skatepark to ensure everyone has a safe session.
The “Flow” & Right-of-Way: just like traffic, skateparks have a natural flow. Beginners should take a few minutes to watch the park’s rhythm before entering. Snaking (cutting in front of another skater) is the most common cause of collisions.
Audience & Spectator Zones: Emphasis on the park is not a playground. Spectators, parents, and friends should stand outside the concrete skate area, to avoid blocking lines or getting run over.
Where to Sit/Watch: Do not sit on ledges, rails, or on the coping (the edge) of bowls/ramps. Ramps are speed zones, not seating, and taking them up prevents active riders from using them.
When to Step Aside: If you are not actively skating or practicing a trick, move to the perimeter.
“Board!” Notification: If a skater loses their board, they must shout “Board!” to warn others.
Don't throw trash or leave any items on the skatepark.
Scooters and bikes can cause collisions and accidents. Please refrain from using them.

Sunday May 17th starting at 9 am is another exciting day for Ocean View! This is our basket install day for our Disc Golf Course! Fairways have been mowed, trimmed, and mulched. We need your help to bring this fun new opportunity to Ocean View! Please let me know if you can volunteer! Tasks will be jackhammering, hauling cement, mixing cement, moving rocks, wheelbarrowing and spreading mulch, trimming. Lunch, snacks, and drinks will be provided for volunteers. If you come for the whole day, you will also get a free disc! These are hot off the press, custom made with our Ocean View Disc Golf logo. We have a large variety of colors and patterns to choose from.
We also need the following for this workday if anyone is able to help out:
2 generators

We have a few more bios to do this week. Got so caught up in all the festivities, that I did not get to finish them last week.
Here are a few more people that were integral to our skatepark being built!

Charlie Parson doesn’t skate, but he enjoys building things and giving back to the community. He has multiple college degrees and certificates, but considers being a single father his biggest accomplishment in life and makes him the most proud.
His son Forrest, also pictured here, was down at the park helping out every day as well. He enjoys riding his motorcycle and has just recently started skating!
This father/son team brought my idea of a fingerboard table to life in a really cool way. This fun addition to the skatepark area allows anyone who is tired, hurt, or doesn’t skate to have a fun thing to do.

If you joined us last Saturday for our Grand Opening event, you know that it was pretty rad! We had an amazing community turnout, lots of fun things to do, great music, food, and of course skating! This event had many volunteers making it happen. The fundraising, silent auction, and merch booths did great and our Kahuku Grind skatepark has now been paid off! The additional funds raised have been deposited into our savings account for our larger skatepark that we are still working towards.
I want to take time to thank all of those involved as this was a major undertaking and was made great by a team of people working together! I tried to remember to thank everyone, and so sorry if I missed anyone. Know that you all were appreciated!
Please continue to support our future project by grabbing a hat or tee shirt with our new Kahuku Grind logo! Available at Lisa's Gift and Garden.

Each day this week I am posting Bios of people that were integral in the building of our skatepark.
Micah Daniel was one of the few people that reached out via email on how he could help and actually followed through with showing up in a big way and helping with a wide array of things!
He grew up on the central coast of California and moved to the Big Island 26 years ago.
Skateboarding was a big part of his life growing up. He wanted to help build the skatepark because he knows first hand how influential skateparks are for the community, especially the next generation. He is really happy he was able to help.
These days he enjoys surfing, music, gardening, sunsets, and short walks on a rocky beach.

This week, I will be posting each day a short bio about each person who was integral in the building of our new skatepark!

Jesse Wheeler moved here from Oregon in 2004. He enjoys skating and building, so skatepark construction is something he’s drawn to. This is the second park he’s been involved with on the Big Island. “Since I'm in Ocean View now, and I'll be using the park as much as anyone, I have to put some work in." He says: "A big thank you to everyone that did the real work in getting the project to the construction phase."
Jesse has worked hard in every aspect of the build, from hauling machinery, concrete, rebar, grading, the sign, providing materials, etc. He had an injury while he was working on the project, and even then continued helping as much as he was able. He also spent a lot of time at the park hosing it down while it cured.
